Root Why root, is it worth the risk? Please read.

Hi, new to this forum and I have read on many sites that it is not worth the trouble and problems that it can create, and that rooting can permanently screw up the phone to where the the phone is unusable or worthless. Obviously many do root and prefer it. So, please, If you could list some of the benefits that I would gain from rooting vs a standard OEM android phone. My phone has Android 2.2.2 . I am certainly not an IT technician but I am much more competent then the average person. Thank you in advance.

Rooting your phone (done correctly) will not screw up your phone at all. Once rooted however there are all kinds of ways you can screw up your phone, usually with little more than the single push of a button.

A non-rooted phone lets you change what the carrier allows, while a rooted phone lets you change anything on your phone you want.

I root my android devices. I generally have an alternative ROM installed, but the rooting is usually for the little things like being able to remove software I couldn't otherwise, or install other things that need root access (the 'app to sd' app I use for example).

If you're happy with how your phone works then there's no real reason to root it. If you're a tinkerer, and want to pull a little more performance out of it, or dig deeper into the guts of the phone then rooting is an option.

The risk is minimal if you're careful, but you'd be mad not to have odin and a ROM lying around you can reset with - just in case that button you push nukes all your hard work.

i did do a root and it did not turn out the way i liked it to....everything seemed to be fine after installing the root and then i turned my phone off. now it wont power back on. i am getting a new one in a couple of days but would like to maybe figure out what went wrong....??? if anyone could maybe list the steps to take and maybe the right software i need? PLZ AND THAK YOU!!!

Can you get into either "Recovery (VOLUP+CAMERA+POWER), or "Download" (VOLDN+CAMERA+POWER)?

If you can get to the download screen, you can get it fixed. Check out the threads here, or gpo to Area rom forum. There is a rooted OEM rom posted in either one of these. this will get you back your factory settings, with root.

Make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.

I had trouble just getting root on mine, until the roms come out from the AreaRom team released their roms. Of course I was looking for a lighter rom for my phone and got what I wanted.

ya i cant even get it to boot to any thing. which isnt my main concern....i was more worryed about the right way to do it....what is the best way. maybe a step by step. im no dummy when it comes to computer hardware and software....but its always nice when doing something new...:D

I have heard some ppl say on this forum that odin works pretty well for rooting but i dont know how to work it......and i cant break another phone they will not replace it twice i dont think...haha. so if anyone knows of a step by step way to do it i would really appreciate it....:D

Directions are in the container file along with the needed image, drivers and the flashing program; all thanks to davew41.

THIS WILL WIPE ALL YOUR DATA

1. Download and unzip the file.
2. Install the Samsung USB drivers (if you dont have them already)
3. From a powered off phone, put phone in Download Mode by holding Vol down, Camera Button, and Power button until the Yellow Downloading message appears
4. Plug phone into USB port
5. Open Odin, you should see a yellow box with a com number
6. Select SPHM820.ops file and the PHONE.tar, and PDA.tar in the appropriate Boxes
7. Click Start

When Odin says reset and the phone reboots the process is done, you do not have to wait for Odin to say pass, that does not work

You need to select the phone.tar if you want to flash your baseband verion
You should not have to flash the BOOT.tar, unless your phone is really messed up

Was that part about not being a dummy true? Could have found this not being one with a simple search... Good luck "not a dummy" with that phone rooting. ;)

The instructions are easy to follow. Any of the downloads for the roms have been packed with a copy of ODIN, along with the files needed to flash the rom. You have to follow the instructions by the letter. They will explain from setting the to accept the programming, to finishing up.

I use ODIN only. I don't think it can any easier, unless you have some do it for you while you sit back and watch.................LOL

lol ok thank you guys i really appreciate your help....unforutunatly my damn android wont be here for another 2 weeks.....Grrrr!!! straight talk deff takes forever when sending replacements...just an fyi to anyone who breaks there phone and gets it replaced.

Well I can see why not to root from the people who have tried and left remarks, but again copied and pasted from above........... what are the benefits??

Some reasons to root...

Save space (remove unused factory apps)
Performance Improvements
Wireless Tethering
Underclocking the CPU to save battery
Custom ROMs
Because you can...
