Why the Droid X hype?

Verizon has been branding their Android phones better. Most people probably think the HTC Droid Incredible is an update of the Motorola Droid because Verizon is branding DROID as an iPhone killer, not knowing that the Incredible and Droid are made by two completely different manufactures. Evo 4G is a new phone on the market without any history. Droid Incredible rides off Droid's history and Droid X will ride off Droid Incredibles history.

The mass consumer doesn't buy a phone for its OS. They buy it for the options it carries (not specs).

My dad is on Sprint with me and when he bought his Samsung Moment, he called me and told me that he bought a Droid. At first I knew there wasnt a Droid on Sprint, but after some research and looking at the box, he said Moment. Then I explained to him that the OS was AnDroid.

I think the Droid for Verizon is what really kicked off Android as a phone OS, and Verizon has done well because of it.

All the articles im seeing now are all about the Droid X dethroning the iPhone 4 as the best smart phone? But am I the only one that its pretty much the same thing just bigger? They are raving about the Droid X's 4.3" screen, 8 megapixel camera, and 1 GHz processor. The EVO did this last month and it didnt receive as much attention. All I see is Droid X vs iPhone 4 reviews. Is it since Verizon is the more favorable service provider of the three?

Pretty sure the EVO was hyped like crazy ;) It doesn't matter to me anyway since I'm enjoying my phone.

Sprint may suck at marketing but they sold out the Evo on launch day across the US and nearly a month later, its still almost impossible to get one. I think they are doing something right.

hats off to Verizon on how they r marketing anDroid phones.
the phones are different (qwerty, touch), but the commercials make them similar to not confuse casual buyers

Not speaking ill of the Evo or anything but the phone is old.

I say that not in a bad way but its been almost a month and is kind of old news.

The Droid X is coming out next month and not trying to be funny but it will be old
as soon as T-mobile launches the samsung galaxy s(whatever they are calling it)

From what i have read in the various forums and other sites, many people prefer
the galaxy over the Droid X and Evo because it's slightly smaller and that processor
is supposedly better.

That's the thing about Android...Each phone gets hyped up for like a week or two
only to be brought up in comparison with a new device.

Droid had it from November-Jan
Nexus had the longest run with Jan-April
Incredible had like a month or so of hype then came the evo and within weeks its being upstaged by the Droid X.

its a never ending cycle :)

Verizon's "Droid" marketing. People think, oh a new droid! A lot of these people don't even realize the OS is called Android. I love phones in general, so I'll play with the Droid X. No way I'm giving up my Evo and going to VZW though.

Agreed. It is a never ending cycle.

i really think if Verizon would have jumped on Apple's band wagon or whatever that Android will still be where it was prior to the Droid's release

1)g1, Htc hero, moment, and a mytouch 3g

But yeah the droid campaign does wonders for verizon but it is confusing for people who arent familiar with it

My dad thought the Evo was a Droid Device lol.
People confused my Droid Eris as the droid and they were like "it looks different"

Im like "it's a different phone by a different company" lmfao

Lol i had to watch what I said so i had to make sure i spoke equally and fairly of all the devices because the EVO owners will jump down my throat lmfao

and wow, you still have a dare?

i remember that little thing. It was touted as "Verizon's mini-iphone) back in like 2008

Hey, she said it....and I agree. Its a never ending cycle.

The Galaxy S has a better gpu than the X. But the cpu is better on the X. Basically those to chips could flip flop as being the best out now. Those 2 and the one in the iPhone 4. Those 3 are the best out right now.

It will be real interesting to see what ppl do that are waiting to get an EVO shipped or are thinking about getting an EVO with the Galaxy S coming.

if what you said is true that knocks the Evo down to number 4 then lol

Honestly i don't know much about GPU, CPU, hummingbird, snapdragon
or the different types of screens...retina, tft, amoled

I am not that strong with technology and i dont want to be

I really think the reason it is hyped up is more so for the Carrier, for the most part.

Sprint is number 3 so it's devices arent as hyped up as At & T(Iphones) and Verizon's(Droid)

Kind of like how t-mobile rarely gets hype(nexus one...which technically isn't a t-mobile phone...its a google phone)

If the Evo was a Verizon device
1)I'd Still have it
2)It would probably be more hyped up then an X on Sprint

If sprint had a device like the Nexus One it would make these decisions a lot more easier. They come out with big devices, small devices, devices with slide out keyboards etc. but they never have a phone in the middle. Like for Verizon it's the Incredible, for at&t you can get the Nexus One, for T-Mobile... well it's T-Mobile and they're just garbage.

I'd like to see some numbers for the amount of sales, but this shortage of the phone is not helping Sprint at all right now. I bought my Evo on launch day and no Sprint near me has had them since... not good.

They'll never come near iPhone numbers if they don't produce nearly that many phones. I'm not saying they need to make 1.7 million EVOs but still, like a good 500,000 just for launch day would've been nice.

In considering that the vast majority of people haven't the slightest clue what happens on these forums, Sprint screwed up big time by not meeting sales projections for this phone. Granted they may have been playing it safe due to the Iphone4 releasing within the initial waves 30 day period so many people could potentially try the phone and switch after trying both. Sounds like a lack of confidence. But due to this they now have the Droid X and Samsung Galaxy to contend with stolen sales.

Ideally, the phone would have been launched in Mid-Early May so they could have some people committed under contract by the time the Iphone came out and wouldn't have had to deal with this.

This is a huge failure by Sprint to have people sitting and waiting for this phone, although as Iphones are flying off the shelves and Apple seems to be far better at meeting demand.

Hmmm...

Sometimes I wonder is it good for ONE DEVICE with ONE OS to sell a million devices in launch day?

Or Is it good for Multiple devices with virtually the same OS to sell a million devices

If you are thinking in a brand way then Apple will always come out on top(for now anyway)

But OS vs OS, it would seem that is where Android has beaten apple.

Consider the past 6 months. Droid Sales+Nexus One Sales+Droid Incredible Sales+Evo 4g sales+Every other low end android device being sold(because lets face it, a lot of people like those)=surpassing amount of one version of iphone

what do you think is better?
The brand or the OS selling more?
Out of curiousity

then again it is 7 a.m. and i may be reaching too far...LOL Sorry

The main reason, marketing

Verizon marketed the Droid like crazy and will continue it with the Droid X and Droid 2. Sprint seems to be doing the same thing they did for the Hero, nothing. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I haven't seen anything yet.

I was sort of shocked so many people knew about the Evo, it was mainly a word of mouth and internet thing.

Sprint is really letting this opportunity slip by. They can't stock the shelves with the EVO and they've been poorly marketing it. They've left the marketing up to blog posters and techie websites.

IMO, in general. The EVO and the Droid X are pretty much the same phone. They come from the same mommie, but different daddies.

SCREEN COLORS
Evo: 16-bit (65k colors)
Droid X: 24-bit (16 million colors)

it always sounds like a huge disparity when comparing the Evo's screen to the other major phones released recently, but in real life I don't consider the disparity to be huge. on paper 16m vs 65k makes the Evo's screen sound you like you can only see black and white (well, and 64,998 other colors lol).

when verizon drops their prices a little then i'll seriously consider them. 'till then, i think i'll gladly stick where i am.

VZW and Moto have to get as much mileage as they can out of their marketing teams and costs. They have a limited time agreement to use the term "Droid" without additional costs from LucasFilm LTD who actually own's the Droid brand/name and licenses use to Moto and VZW.

Sprint was never going to put out as much for Evo even if they were good at marketing because this phone only needed to sell as well as it has and create the splash that it has for it to be successful for Sprint. At the same time, having too many Evos or having more demand than they could ever expect to meet would have been an even more damaging mistake. Imagine a great marketing campaign and being telling people who are patiently/impatiently waiting "no Evos until Aug/Sep" and it would be biblically disastrous for Sprint.

Add to it that HTC just doesn't market with the sense of urgency/desparation that Moto does. Moto's doing it's best to survive, but it's still not in the clear despite selling all those original Droids. Believe me, it hurt Moto that VZW put marketing behind Droid Incredible only to see HTC's Droid vanish by consumption.

Now as to the specific hype behind Droid X, it's what Moto has to offer right now. Moto rode the Razr stallion too long, and they're trying to make sure they don't do that again so they're building in replacement rather than waiting for the market to move away from them.
