Help Why why WHY must it lag!

I've been on the whole much happier with my x10 since the 2.1 update in November, it improved functionality and looked a heck of a lot nicer too.

However I'm starting to get really, really frustrated with this phone again: the lag is getting to ridiculous levels. It is so slow and even a reboot does not help my cause and I'm wondering if other people are experiencing these issues. Admittedly Android is new to me with this phone and at first I thought using a task killer would be helpful like it is on Windows, in order to free up memory and CPU resource. However, I read an article the other day (can't remember where, sadly) which stated that the Android system has been built from the ground up to utilise all of the memory on the phone and closing apps makes no difference to the speed, as the phone manages everything itself. Can anyone confirm?

Now for the problems. Texting is by far my biggest issue. Not only does it take forever to navigate through my inbox, but when I go to actually write my text, it is so pathetically unresponsive that I often want to throw the phone out of the nearest window! I can be tapping away at the screen and nothing will come up until suddenly it will auto fill with what i have typed, but there will be a number of errors, so I have to go back and edit what it said. Similarly, another equally frustrating thing is when I've managed to write an entire text, only to use backspace - and the phone will decide to suddenly rapidly backspace out my entire text!!

My phonebook is also unreponsive, and sometimes when a call comes in, the phone will sit there vibrating, yet the screen will stay black, until the phone finally catches up and displays the caller ID and answer/reject buttons on the screen.

This is all so frustrating for me - I'm not an Apple fan, in fact I am anything but and I despise the iPhone and the way everyone feels they need to have one, but at least the iPhone 'just does things' - I had a go on one for the first time the other day and every single thing I did was instantaneous. There was not one bit of lag from one screen to another, one web page to another, etc.

Is there anything I can do? I know these phones are more like computers now, but it actually feels like I have a computer in my hands that is in desperate need of an upgrade! Sadly the only upgrade option is to replace the phone - something which is not an option for me, being locked in to a 2 year contract.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Doing the same for me also...this morning i tried to use mediascape to show off some pictures then the screen became black (at the animation between menus) then nothing for a minute. I tried to reboot and it took more than a minute just to shut down! Sadly i had the same issues with txting either it does not show what i've wrote or the (space) or (BackSpace) just stick and erase the whole text. Sometimes now it starts to tap the wrong letters when i type, and this despite the fact that i use Jonas's HTC IME.

I might try to reflash...but i think it might be a touch screen issue.

for me being on 2.1 and rooted im not having many problems at all. very rarely will a text act up and do what you said..

but im happy with it. sure the screen lags a bit here and there like for example right after i just downloaded an app or something like that. it takes a min or so to get its bearings back in line and speed up again.

The more things you put into the phone, the more problems you might get, and ofter it is hard to find the root of problems.

I think that too much synchronisation will lag the phone. You can have it synchronize with very many sources, (market, fb, picasa, gmail, etc) which will not lock the relevant object, but take resources away. Also some programs like Mediascape rely on thumbnails. When you havent accessed it in a while it has to make several of them just to start. Apps can also mess things up. I have had several strange errors that disappeared after I update an app. You spot when apps force close on you, not when they lag your phone.

A theory I had before was that if you install a new launcher you should completely clear the old ones of wallpapers and widgets, to not clogg things up. The homescreen is obviously preloaded and two full ones can only be bad.

I have noted occasional lag when I write sms, and I think that is because I now have loads of sms in the phone. I have backed them up and plan to clear them out a rainy day. Same with images. More of them, creates longer load times.

This was my 5 cents. Good luck.

Agreed.

Install Netqin Mobile Guard and take a look at what apps are frequently running in the background.

I have one app called Onion News Network that I used a couple times to watch some fake funny news clips and I hadn't used it in weeks but after I installed the Mobile Guard and took a look at the list of running tasks I saw that ONN was in there and it was using my precious RAM. So I removed it.

If I ever notice my phone runs slow I just run the Mobile Guard widget that I put on my desktop and click the optimize button...really helped me identify applications that are real memory hogs and don't close properly....helped me realize that not closing Angry Birds properly was really hogging up my memory....kept it running in the background.

And for it autotyping stuff...look into changing the keyboard you use...the Android default can be messy sometimes. I think I'm going to switch back to the HTC keyboard that I had in 1.6....it worked a lot better and didn't mess around like the default one does sometimes.

I have to admit i have tons of apps i really don't use..(or just tried and forgot them here) It might be the reason for slowdowns...as for the keyboard, well, as said before i use the Jona's IME....Also known As...HTC Keyboard...still do the sticky keys...like space or backspace are the most annoying.

It seems strange that some people experience the problems I'm having, whereas for others the phone works perfectly well.

Is there any tool out there that can generate some sort of performance report on the phone, which will show things like running processes, how much CPU % they use etc?

It's so frustrating when you just want to get something done quickly and have to wait whilst the phone freezes up when it wants to.

NetQin Mobile Guard. At any time, it can show you what apps are running the background and how much memory they are using. Same with WiFi and Data, it shows how much memory is being used and how much can be saved.

I have around 80 installed apps on my phone and the more apps you have, and the more you open different apps, the slower the phone gets.

I use the app maybe once every couple days after I have opened a few apps and didn't close them properly....then I have to use the app and close a few things that I thought were closed.

I tried installing this program and immediately noticed a reduction in battery life. Also, charging from a USB port slowed down to an almost unusable speed (I know it's going to be slower than using a charger, but this was ridiculous).

I've now uninstalled Mobile Guard and am getting the same battery life I had before installing it, and the USB recharge speed is also back to how it was.

Definitely be mindful of installing apps. By default apps install to your phone(not SD card) and fill it up....this will cause performance issues. If you haven't used an app in a month, remove it...make sure you back it up so if it contains any config you get that back if you ever reinstall but dont' just keep installing apps apon apps and expect performance. Most of other things you can do, like JIT require rooting and that's a big step nand not everyone wants to make it(although they should :) ).

I uninstalled it as well.

But while I did have it installed it did help me find some problem applications so that I could remove them.

If I ever notice my phone is acting funky, I will install a task manager take a look at what is up....when done uninstall.

For me it changed the CPU usage on the phone from around 9-12 percent up to 28-32 percent constant.
