Why wireless N been confirmed yet?

N works but not well. I'm about 24 to 18inches for a Netgear N router and the Evo reports 64-72mbps. If I walk a few feet away then I'm using sub G speeds.

What are you using to test this on your Evo? I'm curious since my internet connection is capped at 6mb so online speed test services won't help.

N is something of a gimmick on these things.

Agreed. No need for anything greater than G for web browsing in my opinion.

That is my point really. It shouldn't matter what hardware I have. It should just work.

not a true statement. many many folks use wifi daily, myself included.

if you list your gear that you are trying to connect to, someone can help.

if you want personal assistance, connect with me via PM and we can sort it out..

What app tells you what speed you are connected at?

EDIT: I found it. Im connecting at ~65Mbit to an N router thats ~25 feet away and behind a wall.

If you want "it should just work," you're in the wrong business.... thats like getting a new car, sitting in the driver seat, getting mad because it doesn't drive itself, and yelling "it should just work." Nevermind that you have to put the key in the ignition, turn the key, press the gas, operate the blinker and steering wheel....

This is the PC world, sometimes you have to tweek things to make them work correctly... if you don't want to.. get an iphone and live in a locked down world where everything's done for you and you get no control over your phone...

At work, we have a dual Wireless a/b/g/n router.

Anyway, my EVO definitely sees it as a 72+ mbps connection with "GOOD" WEP signal, but when trying to obtain IP address, and it's no go since the update. It continually tries. Password is correct.

I used to be able to connect at 54 mbps. Excited they added it, now they need to advertise it. Suspect it wasn't ready for prime time before, and actually since patch.

Have a G router at home, and it connects to it at 54 mbps no problem.

Those that have success with N, are you encrypted? If so, what security protocol?

WPA2 is the only way to go. WEP is so insecure it's not even funny.

I'll have to have a look at that settings page when I connect at home. Must've missed that somehow.

I use wp2 also... I think it is funny how a lot of people say how WEP is so unsecure (I say it to customers all the time too though, lol), but the truth is who would actually "hack" into a home network. Not saying it's super hard, but really... :o

back on topic... I've notice a HUGE difference in speed increase (I have a netgear wireless-N router)...

I noticed that the servers are different, but it wouldn't make that much of a speed difference!! I always got around 3-4Mb/s at home on my wifi even on my touch pro 2.

n, g, it doesn’t matter. You will never download faster than your internet connection anyways. I have 10/2 FiOS from Verizon. I get about 6 down over wifi at my house. Upgrading to n will only be beneficial for accessing stuff on the computers directly connected to your network.

I've searched the forum and haven't found a thread with this Q/A.

I know Froyo will support 802.11n WIFI when it becomes available (not as a root). But I read a number of articles that said the recent software upgrade *MIGHT* provide 802.11n WIFI support. We have a G router and have considered upgrading to N for a wider range of single, but haven't seen anything conslusive that the update actually upgraded to N. Does anyone have confirmation?

Also, would an N router connect to a G-enabled device or only devices that accept N? I don't know a lot about WIFI, so please forgive the questions if they are "simple".

No confirmation I can give you for your first question, but your second question: any good N router will be backwards compatible with G. It'll state that in the specs.

Of course you can set up an N router to only connect with N devices (G routers can do this too), but that's different and not how they're set up by default.

I have confirmation. After the update I was able to put my Linksys E3000 router on N only and my EVO connects to the 2.5 ghz band. My router is a dual band router so it broadcasts on 2.5 ghz (a,b,g,n) at the same time as it broadcasts on 5 ghz (wider area, more coverage, faster, N only). Before the update I ran the 2.5 side in Mixed Mode (a,b,g,n). Keep in mind in order to connect to the 5ghz band you need 2 antennas which the EVO does not have so it will only connect to the 2.5 ghz

If you root your evo you can gain wireless N for your phone. I have a wireless N Router and have had my evo on it and its soooo fast. So the phone will support it and I am not sure what the hold up is. So if you do want the N speed for your phone you will need to root to get it.

A N Router is backward compatible to G and B devices. So yes a G/B device will run on a Wireless N router. Of course make sure it will support it. Most of the linksys/cisco routers do and will say it on the box.

Yes, N routers are backwards compatible but you shouldn't mix G/B devices in with N devices as it will slow the N devices down to G speeds. This is a pretty well known phenomenon. See this article.

On a somewhat related note, has anyone been able to connect at anything above 65mb on their N network? Mine doesn't seem to want to...

Rooting isn't necessary for wireless N. With the last HTC update you can connect to wireless N as long as it's broadcast on 2.5Ghz. I have a variety of access points at work and have confirmed this with devices set up as wireless N only.
