Help Wi-FI - Automatic Turn On

Is there a way to set up the wi-fi to automatically turn on, i.e. when I return home? I know it might be a bold request, but figured there may be an app or way to in the programming. I usually toggle the wi-fi on and off manually with the wi-fi widget.

If this is worth $10 to you, take a look at Locale from a dev named two forty four am. It will use GPS to determine that you're home and set wifi on. When you leave, GPS will tell it you're not home and you can then shut off wifi and 3g/4g will resume.

I should mention that I used a free trial version of the app when it was in open beta, and I never used the location features in it. I mainly wanted it for something that could set my sounds different based on time of day. I ended up going with a different app specifically for that function rather than using Locale. It's got 4 stars after 2,600+ reviews, so it's keeping some people happy.

Unfortunately, the 15 minute app return policy really harms your ability to try this out properly, but most devs that make complex apps like this are fair about emailed refund pleas outside the Market's mechanics.

There are tradeoffs. If you're doing this to save battery life, you're going to lose some of the wifi gains to popping the GPS radio on and off occasionally. However, I think Locale can be set to use coarse cell tower location rather than fine GPS location.

There could also be free or lower cost alternatives to Locale. What you want exists, though. My suggestions might be out of touch with the best app for what you need.

You can do the same thing with Tasker and it's currently $6.44

I use Tasker, it would highly recommend it. There is a program\task\profile, where it will determine your location not by GPS, but by your local cell towers and your proximity to them, so you don't necessarily need to drain your battery with GPS.
y5 I believe simply checks for your "remembered" wifi spots, every so often - which can also drain battery.
I used y5 on my Droid X, but figured I'd just go for Tasker - since it can replace y5 along with MANY other apps (from all of its functionality)

SwitchPro Widget is what I use on my Droid X. The latest update now includes timers which you can set up for various functions, including WiFi. I have mine set to automatically turn on at 5pm when I get home from work and off at 6:30am when I leave for work in the morning. It works like a charm.

I can't get Tasker to do this. Error message: "No Location Providers Enabled and Available", even though I have the radius set at 500m and have a strong cell signal.

Didn't realize the update had this feature, thanks!
