Try running it again. Mine didn't work the first time I ran it, but it worked the second time.

ok I'm an idiot. Had to download the version from the dev website and not from the Appstore. After that it worked fine.

Sorry - a little confused by this thread. Can anyone confirm the latest android-wifi-tether works on a stock 2.1 ROM that's only been rooted? (i.e. no complete ROM flash for iptables, etc....).

android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code
(doesn't mention Galaxy S 2.1 compatibility)

As far as I know it does. The only requirements are that the phone be rooted. Just make sure you get the most up to date release for your model of phone.

If I tether my phone on AT&T's network, can they tell that I'm doing this and auto-charge me for tethering as well? If so, how can I avoid them detecting it?

your using your phones 3g network to broadcast a tether wifi signal so its like your using it to browse the net, if you were plugging it in and turning on tethering they would be able to see it, in this fashion the answer is nope.

Thanks all. It worked first time!!!

Stock 2.1 Captivate. Rooted. (I backed up ROM with RomManager just incase). wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9.apk installed via Android SDK method (...SDK\tools>adb install C:\wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre9.apk) when phone in USB debugging mode.

Wireless tether app icon there. Fired it up. Gave root permission. Then could immediately connect to phone via wifi and surf.

Now I can find that sweet spot in the house where 3G signal is strongest and leave phone there!!!!!

So I downloaded and installed the newest version of the app, wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre14.apk, and I can't get either of my laptops to acquire an IP address off of the phone. Both of the Windows XP laptops say they are connected to the phone, but they are unable to get an address from the phone.

I have access control turned off, tried with encryption both off and on and it made no difference. I can't figure it out, any ideas?
