Wi-Fi vs Data on Galaxy Note

Can someone educate me on this, please.

When I'm connected to my home wireless router or outdoor Wi-Fi hot-spot, and then try to enable the data network (I use Apndroid to switch the data network on and off), I see the H+ icon (I assume this is an HSPDA network) briefly appear then disappear.

The H+ icon with the orange and green up/down arrows only stays visible if I switch the Wi-Fi off.

Is this normal behavior or am I missing something? I assume the phone disregards the data network if connected to a Wi-Fi but I initially thought that you could have both services enabled and the phone chooses whichever one it wants to use.

Thanks in advance

Trevor

I believe that if WiFi is enabled the device uses that and not the network, but smarter folks than me I'm sure will correct me if I am wrong.

When you switch on Wi-Fi, the "H,H+,3G,E" symbol should disappear, and be replaced by the wi-fi icon. That's how my Note (German version, in the USA) works. Once you switch off a CONNECTED wi-fi Note, the wi-fi connected symbol goes away, and the radio symbol should pop back on.

You have to be careful that you don't have some setting set that turn off the wifi in a sleep mode. When I got my first android device, I was in an wifi enviorment 24/7 but I noticed I was still getting data usage. I realized when I first unlocked the device I would see the 3G icon for a second before the wifi symbol would replace it. Upon checking my usage, I realized I was getting charged for allot of data usage in the middle of the night when the device was asleep.

Being on a 200mb plan, that is a major concern. I finally found a setting to keep wifi "Always on" and eventually got an App called "3G Watchdog" which tracks my usage and gives me alerts if I get close to my limit and another App called "Toggle net switch widget" which allows me to easily turn off and on all connections. I normally now leave my 3G turned off unless I actually need it.

Thanks, Mitch. The GPRS data system can be a sneaky b******* if you're not careful and I ran up big bill (later waived) without realizing it.

I use 3G Watchdog and Apndroid all the time and only turn on the 3G when I absolutely need to. In my case, I didn't realize you could still use 3G services on a 3G enabled device WITHOUT a data plan but at grossly exorbitant rates.

A quick lesson learned.
