Help Wifi and mobile date

HI,

my gf got her new Desire today. we have notcied when using it at home with the wifi connected to our home broadband the mobile data is still being used. Is this normal or should the phone not choose wifi instead of mobile data when ever it can. it will show both symbols for wifi and 3g but when ever using the browser the arrows on under 3g are lighting up. checked by using 3g watchdog and it is using the mobile data instead of wifi.

If both symbols are shown, then wifi is on, but not connected to your router.

its showing up connected in the settings. and when i turned off mobile data i was able to use wifi still.
