Help Wifi and Update Problem

99dmg

Newbie
Hey, I recently purchased a Galaxy Nexus from craigslist and I'm loving it but I ran into a problem.

When I'm on Wifi and my phone has been on idle for longer than maybe 30 minutes the wifi bar turns grey and I lose my connection to the internet. It says that I am still connected to my router, but I cannot connect to the internet (tried google play/chrome/hotmail, etc). If i turn my wifi off and on it resolves the issue. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I tried to update my device to see if it solves the problem, but when I check for updates under settings it says that my phone is up to date, but I'm only at version 4.0.2. Is it normal to be stuck like this?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

several people have had this issue. It's really just proof that Samsung's build quality stinks.

I don't know that there is a permanent fix for this. Does it do it on any wifi network you're on or just yours?

also what type of G Nex do you have? GSM, Sprint , or VZW?

I have the GSM version I believe since I am from Canada.

I haven't tried any other wifi networks as I don't have another one to test until I go back to school in Sept.

Also, is there any reason why it's not updating past 4.0.2.

Thanks

Reset the actual router and reconnect to it. My Samsung Galaxy Tab experiences the same symptoms, haven't had it happen on my Nexus yet. I've searched and have found numerous other people complaining of the same issue, and a router reset usually fixes it for them. Works for me as well.

As for the update, I'm sorry I can't help you there. I thought the GSM versions got the updates before the rest?

Do you have WiFi sleep policy set to never? Also, choose the band your router uses instead of auto, and uncheck avoid poor connections. I have no issues with WiFi setup this way, both active and with phone sleeping.

From what I recall, the Canadian versions are updated through the mobile carriers. I believe at least one of them still has not updated from 4.0.2. You can tell by checking which "device" you have -- the easiest way to find it seem to be to go into the Maps app, then Settings>About and looking for "Device". The device version that Google updates directly is "yakju", yours is likely something like "yakjuxw".

Many people have flashed their non-yakju phones to the yakju software -- one such thread with instructions is here. Once finished, your phone should get updates directly from Google and you will be notified of a series of updates that will take you to 4.1.1.

Thanks for all your replies. I've restarted my router and messed around with it already but I'll keep trying.

I do have my phone set so it always keeps wifi on.

I think I will flash it to manually upgrade it to see if that fixes the problem as well

EDIT:

Also, choose the band your router uses instead of auto, and uncheck avoid poor connections. I have no issues with WiFi setup this way, both active and with phone sleeping.

Looks like I had this ticked "Enable Auto Scan on Power ON" under my router channel settings, so I've unticked it and manually set it to 4. I'll wait and see if it fixes it (waiting 30 min each time to see if it's fixed is the worst part :()

EDIT 2: Waited 30 mins and the wifi bar turned grey, but I was able to access the internet on every app... What does the grey wifi bar mean anyways?

EDIT 3: Looks like it didn't work. Time to flash upgrade

Not the router. WiFi advanced settings on the phone. In WiFi settings hit menu.

Wtf. now my wifi bar is blue and it's not connected to the internet........

This is getting really annoying

I just read this somewhere

"You need a recent Wireless-N router not wireless-g or draft-n but 802.11n router that supports the low power state wifi connection and instant reconnect from sleep.

Wireless 802.11g disconnects when you sleep but 802.11n keeps your device connected in a low power way to support push notifications."

This could explain everything, anyone know if it's true?

I totally disagree! Until the upgrade to Jelly Bean 4.1.1 I never encountered any of this. I have four devices of which three are on JB and one still on ICS (Asus TF300). All of the three JB devices loose their connection to Wifi over night, the TF300 still receives push notifications. On two of the trhee I did a clean flash of the Google factory JB images and did not restore oany apps or settings, everything was installed fresh. My GSM Gnex never had any Wifi issues prior to JB upgrade. As someone mentioned on here this problem has to do with the Wifi sllep policy in the firmware. None of the other elements in the equation (hardware, router setup and firmware) have changed. I'll try using a fixed channel in the router config and see if this helps.

I do believe as well that it isn't the phone thats doing it (well hoping anyways), but I'm pretty sure its not JB as I was experiencing the problem with 4.0.2 as well
