wifi codes

~6 months ago I got my phone repaired (a HTC One X - but this is a general android question hence posting here), but it got replaced with a brand new clean handset. Once on and updated my old wifi codes were present....without connection or backup to a PC.
So....if move to a new HTC, will present wifi access codes be recalled?
If I move to another brand, e.e. Samsung, will they remain?

If not, how do i backup and copy, or migrate to a new handset?

Google syncs certain data related to your device and Google account, when you sign into a new android device of the same make/model then Google can restore certain data points.

Its not foolproof.

If you want to make sure your data points are backed up then you need to use an app like Helium backup - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup

If you are rooted then you can create very specific and complete device backups using a tool like Titanium Backup - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackupPro

Google has a bit of history when it comes to gathering passwords without specific authorisation ;)

I saw a story this morning about Chrome wanting to collect passwords even when you have autofill turned off.

Settings, Backup & reset, Back up my data:

"Back up app data, Wi-Fi passwords and other settings to Google servers"

On your new handset, if the "Automatic restore" option is enabled during initial setup, your wi-fi passwords will be restored along with contacts, calendar entries etc.

That's how it happened previously....it is checked to backup automatically....great.
Thanks....you learn something everyday!

When I factory wiped my One X it remembered all my wi-fi settings. However, when I upgraded to my One M8 none of them came across. Used the same gmail address both times

Are you sure you had the setting to restore previously backed up data enabled?

How and where do you set the setting to restore previously backed up data enabled when setting up a new phone? Or can it be checked afterwards?
Who would remember this, something they do only with a new phone once every two years, in the excitement of starting a new phone, not many....i might, and only due to this thread!

Anyway, rod9669, what do you think of M8, haven't met anyone with one yet?
Am due upgrade and that is my choice, but the camera spec is "different"!

It restored everything apart from the wifi - messages, contacts, apps - even the wallpaper (I think)

Compared to the One X the M8 is on a different level. Fast, unbelievable battery life (I charge overnight - my X would have been below 10%, the lowest I've got the M8 to is 38%), the build is excellent, car mode (which I use a lot of) is great. Don't really use the camera for decent photos, but for snapshots it is brilliant.

have a look around for the best deals - I got unlimited text and calls, 2Gb data on EE via direct mobiles for

So can anyone actually tell me, when to do this during the setup of a new phone, is there actually an auto restore option?

it asks you to do it via HTC sync - worked very well, even brought my music across from my old phone. Gives you load of options of what to bring across, but not the wifi (that I remember anyway)
