Help WiFi Cutting off 3G in public places

Ever since i started leaving my wifi on I been having this problem. Where if I enter a place like McD's, Starbucks or any place with public wifi my phone's wifi tries to connect and it can not. And when the WiFi doesn't connect my 3G shuts off. So basically all my wifi and 3G bars are grayed out and the only thing i can do to fix it is turn the wifi off.

Is it a setting I pick that is wrong or is there something wrong with my phone?

Unless you manually authorize/save the connection in Wifi setting, it won't connect and 3G/4G should be still on until it connects with Wifi source. Are you seeing only gray bar or gray bar with 3G icon when this happens? If there is 3G icon on it, data is still on.

If you are annoyed by this issue, you may try to set Wifi to sleep while screen is off. But leaving Wifi on with default "always on" setting shouldn't give this problem.

As far as I know, if you connect to a wifi access point it will disable 3G/4G. That much is normal. If you want it to stop automatically connecting to the access point, make it forget the McDonalds wifi point. From then on it should ignore it.

It would be nice if there was a setting that would allow to NOT automatically connect to saved access points though. I know Windows has this feature.

Hmm the thing is is that it is not connecting to those spots. I have never connected to McDs or Starbuck, but my phone knows there is WiFi near tries to access it but can not. And because it is trying and can not connect the 3G goes off. So basicall the wifi is grayed out and the 3g is grayed out, I have to manually turn the wifi off for me to get data.

Hmm, that's weird. Mine doesn't drop 3G/4G while it's just searching, trying to connect with Wifi. It disconnects 3G/4G only when it's on some Wifi connection.

If you see any sort of Wifi icon (greyed out or blue) near the signal bars, that means your connected to wifi. If its just searching, you shouldn't see anything.

If it is connected to any sort of wifi (internet access or no) it will shut off 3G/4G data.

I've had the same issue when wifi is on and within range of an access point with a generic name that is cached in my phone.

To prevent this, I use Llama to turn wifi on at home and off when I leave.

Here is what it looked like at the dunkin donuts, this is driving me quite mad.....

maybe it is airtwist that is causing this problem

Then that's definitely your problem. You are connected to wifi.

Pretty much the only fixes I can think of is making the phone forget whatever access point its connecting to or disabling wifi. Not much you can do.

Your phone is connected to their Wifi point, but the data is not authenticated yet. That's why Wifi bar looks gray. This happens often with public Wifi points. You need to go into their web page in browser and click button to accept it to use data on their Wifi.
