Wifi/Data question

I just got the Inspire yesterday when it first came out. Traded in my new captivate before the 30 days to get it and I am extremely happy so far. Just one question though.

At the top the E with the checkmark, which I am guessing stands for Edge Network? Is always there, I turn data off when not using. Anyway when at home I connect through wifi. I noticed that when making any kind of online connection whether it be at marketplace or browser the E with the check mark becomes E with the up and down arrows, like it is using data???
I don't know if I am actually using data or not, but the wifi signal is showing. Can anyone offer an answer to that? Hopefully it all made sense.

Thanks

BTW Hello to everyone!

I noticed that too and I believe what it's doing is connecting to the market via DATA instead because ATT wants to make sure we only get the apps that they want us to get off of the market place, the same way if you pull your sim card and connect via wireless to the market you can see different apps, not sure if you can this with the inspire but you could do something like that with the captivate.

I also have a question though, I checked my data usage and i am at 156MB so far. just WOW!!!! what is odd most of the time it should say wap.cingular since that is how my other phone shows, but this will also show "phone" what the hell is that? I wonder why this phone has used that much data, none of my other android phones would have used that much in 1 day that's a whole lot of data being used!!!!!!

02/14 12:14 AM wap.cingular Internet/MEdia Net Sent 4KB

02/14 12:14 AM phone Internet/MEdia Net Sent 3237KB

02/13 11:00 PM wap.cingular Internet/MEdia Net Sent 1KB

02/13 08:13 PM phone Internet/MEdia Net Sent 40638KB

I installed netcounter but I am still confused. Does data show up under Cell?
And it makes no sense to put wifi ability on if it is just going to use data too. But like I said even when I open the browser it comes up, has me worried I will go over...but yes I just got NetCounter after reading it in another post.

I just downloaded the DOG too, i remember having it on my captivate and just never got it for this one. But good lord 156 mb and its not even a day!!!

I know how to take care of data usage, I have had 6 different android phones so far between att and verizon, also I got a WP7 phone and the highest I have ever gotten was 1.1 gb on the WP7 phone and that was because i watched some NETFLIX!! But this one using that much in a 24 hour period HOLY CRAP!!! And i've done no streaming of any type.

In the same situation here. My wife is at 114MB after having the phone for 24 hours, and for more than half of that time the phone was hooked up to our home WiFi network. I thought that if you were on WiFi it wouldn't use data? Am I mistaken in this or is there something else going on? Compared to me I'm at 23MB for the same time period/usage. Heck our last three statements with verizon we never went over 70MB/month!

One combination of apps I also like is Timeriffic and APNDroid

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alfray.timeriffic
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.code.apndroid

With Timeriffic, you can set a schedule. Like mute the phone from 11PM-7AM or turn-off wifi from 8AM-5PM.

APNDroid will turn-off mobile data. Timeriffic sees APN is installed and gives you that option to schedule it as well.

If you're worried about mobile data overnight, install both apps and set your schedule. :)

With my iPhone, I was always forgetting to mute my phone at work. Don't have that problem anymore!
