Help Wifi Direct?

JunBringer

I know it has the newest version of Android Beam, but if I'm trying to send files like mp3s to my cousin with his GS3 we use Wifi Direct right now since I have a Note LTE. Will this have Wifi Direct or is that obsolete now with Jelly Bean's Android Beam?

Beam uses NFC which is much, much slower than WiFi Direct and Bluetooth. NFC is not really a good file transfer protocol.

Yeah I was under that impression so I was hoping that the Nexus 4 came with wifi direct. Guess I'll find out the hard way.

Just to clarify what I said earlier, as far as I understand it, Android Beam is just a fancy name for NFC. NFC, while an awesome technology would require the devices to be nearly touching each other.

Here are some approximate possible data transfer speeds and other info for the various technologies.

(please note these are very approximate, all speeds in megabits per second)

NFC: (aka Android Beam)
0.5 Mbps
Range: ~2 inches

Bluetooth 2:
2.1 Mbps
Range: ~10ft

Bluetooth 3.0
24 Mbps
Range: ~10ft

WiFi Direct
11 Mbps -250 Mbps
Range: ~100+ft

And as a shameless self promotion, if you would like to transfer Mp3s between devices using Bluetooth, check out my app BlueMuze (link in sig). And feel free to contact me through the forums here or otherwise if you need any other help.

Hope that helps
