Help WiFi Error

Semperverus

Newbie
So I just got the motorola triumph 3 days ago, and I love everything about it except for one issue. I get intermittent ability to enable WiFi. It works sometimes, but not others. Restarting the phone does not help one bit. I've installed ClockworkMod Recovery, and I've wiped both cache and dalvik, but to no avail (it still starts and stops when it wants to). One thing I noticed was that locking the screen seems to turn wifi off and switch to 3G.

As a side note, I have googled the crap out of this issue. I haven't been able to find anything on it, so I figure I can ask you all here for help. I can sudo (haven't dropped symlinks to make it "true root" yet), but if I need to tweak with the /system partition, I need the proper mount command (haven't found that either).

A million thanks to anyone who can help! Right now I want to keep this as stock as possible while removing the bloatware and fixing the wifi if possible. Perhaps CM7 when every issue is squelched, but for now stock.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that when I try to enable wifi, it sits there waiting for the radio itself to turn on, and then dropping to the message "error". Not issues connecting to a network (that's always worked just fine).

It seems I've found a temporary fix for this problem. I followed the guide found here:
Some Triumph tips and tricks.
and added a shortcut in launcher pro to the IP settings tool, and set the wifi sleeper to "never". It seems to be working great now! I'll post back if I do run into any issues though, so don't hold your breaths yet.

I know I ran into an issue with my wifi. It would connect and disconnect right away, and once in a great while it would last a day.
I tried everything from using Static IP, restarting my phone, restarting my router and phone.. none of that worked.. finally I just changed the SSID on the router to a different name. I entered the password on my phone and now it works 100%

I'm not sure if this is the same issue that you are having but I thought I'd tell you what I had problems with, and how I fixed it.

Thank you :)
That's not the issue i was having, but its good to put up info for the googlers.

I updated my main post to better describe my issue.

So I've been playing around with my phone, and it seems that the "solution" i had before isn't working anymore. It keeps dropping to error now, and only occasionally connecting. There is a massive amount of wifi traffic in my apartment complex though, I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Any suggestions?

Try wifi analyzer from the market to see if there might be a better channel for your router to broadcast on.

Oh, sorry missed that.

You could try a different ROM, or reinstalling the stock one. (Factory reset in CWM will just erase the OS and not put it back, so you need to get the ROM to put back on) There is a ROM list (including the stock ROM) in the All Things Root Guide sticky. If you had the stock recovery I would say a factory reset. Have you tried those steps? Or just cleared the caches?

If it doesn't work on a different ROM I would say it is a hardware malfunction. And that you should call VM about that.

Did you try WPA/WPA2 PSK ?

I would try Stock ROM. Then I would do a Factory Device/Data Reset. If the WiFi was still problematic, I'd return the phone for a replacement.

So it seems that I've got myself a phone with some touchy hardware. I don't think Amazon will take this phone back, and I don't know how to get ahold of any VM reps to see what I can do about this (nothing on the site is indicative of this). Is there something I can do in the terminal to see what's going on with the WiFi?

Alright, so in Logcat via ADB, I'm getting something along the lines of:

Each time I try to enable my WiFi. This is now in CM7 TG-Reloaded.

I also have this issue, the WiFi won't turn on randomly and I fiddle with my phone for long periods of time attempting to get it to turn on. I tried the stuff you suggested here:Some Triumph tips and tricks., and that seems to have worked. What strikes me as interesting, however, is that before I changed the sleep policy setting and set static IP to off, it showed my IP and Mac as unavailable. Is it possible the Mac is somehow not being loaded correctly and this is causing the error? I would imagine the phone hardware should always know the Mac of the WiFi antenna, and should never be unavailable.
I realize this may be a hardware issue, but if it is, I am VERY hesitant to get a replacement, and the reason is this.
My phone is almost perfect compared to some issues I've heard. Some people have dead pixels, a loud vibrate, bleed through from the buttons, and probably other things I don't know about.
Do I really want to sent my almost perfect phone in for a phone that has the potential for this issues...? Not so much.
Can we keep this alive to find a fix for this? It's very much a nuisance, and I'd like to draw some light to it.

Some technical info:
I use a static Ip. Ip: 192.168.0.33, Subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.0.1, Dns 8.8.8.8
Nothing special. I've tried several roms, including stock. I'm fairly sure I've seen this on all, but I could be mistaken, as it was a while ago.
Thanks =).

I would very much like to keep this thread open. I'm getting a return from amazon today, and i'm examining that phone before I send this one back (that way if one is messed up worse than the other, i'll send the worse one back).

I did revert back to stockrom with a nandroid backup, and when I did, the WiFi magically worked again. This tells me something fishy is going on in software and not hardware. Perhaps someone messed with the in-built drivers or some crap? I'm still learning the software architecture of how android phones actually work. I know enough to get myself in trouble.

I've had two replacement phones at once, with a total of 3 phones, and the phone I have is currently better than both. One had the bleeding problem, and the other one had an issue I can't remember.

How long did you use the stock rom? It seems like it doesn't work often when there's no cell signal, and it's also really random as to when it starts to happen. Maybe it just worked for the small time you had stock?
It would be great for it to be software, though. That would mean no need to replace =P.

I had stock most of the time I used the phone. I switched to CM7 shortly to see if it would fix my issues (and to see what cm7 was like), and nothing fixed it. My WiFi was DOA, with the ~5% chance of actually starting. Reverting back to a backup of stock 2.2 allowed the wifi to work out of the box where it had originally stopped completely.
