Help Wifi Hot Spot

I have never rooted a phone, and frankly, doing so scares me a bit. Is it possible to make the D3 a wifi hot spot without rooting? I'm getting a Kindle Fire, and having the ability to use the phone as a wifi hot spot appeals to me.

Yes, doing to WiFi hack will scare you way more than rooting. Rooting simply gives you access to do more, but does not actually risk your phone at all. It's what you do AFTER rooting that gets people (me included) into trouble. The actual root process is harmless. The process for doing the WiFi hack can possibly kill your phone's radio entirely and the program to hack it is quite overwhelming.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I am convinced not to try this. Question, though: when I go into settings, then wireless and networks, I see an option for tethering & mobile hotspot. According to the help, "you can turn your phone into a mobile hotspot, to share your phone's internet connection with one or more computers or other devices."

Using that, shouldn't I be able to connect the Fire to the phone wirelessly and surf if I'm not in a wifi area?
 
If you try to boot it up, you'll get a message prompting you to buy the $20 a month service from VZW. The hack changes the radio signature keys so that absolutely all data through the phone looks as if it is used as the phone and not a connected device. EasyTether does work (may require root?) with the OEM cable for wired tethering, though.

Sure. For $20/month for 2gigs of tethered data, wired or wireless. After the first 2gigs, it costs $20 more for each additional gig. These charges apply even if you already are paying for unlimited data, in addition to the charges for whatever data plan you already have in other words.

If I'm not mistaken, you can use EasyTether WITHOUT the extra cost or without the risky radio signature change. The only issue I have is that it must be installed on the client computer and I do not have that ability on school computers where I wish to bypass WebSense by getting off the school network.

The free version is limited to only working with non-secure sites, by which I mean http only, not https sites. Surely understandable, and maybe not a big deal for any given user.

Remember that the way EasyTether works is basicly to hide the code numbers that indicate you are tethering from Verizon, so its no less a hack though it is temporary. Also, wireless tethering is convenient, though even with wireless-N you can only get a 54mb connection (G speed).

The Radio Hack would probably be the better option, unless you can pay the $20 a month...

PS I'm surprised no one has written a script to do the radio hack for you, although i suppose since the App you use doesn't have CMD switches (that I know of) it require a bit of work
 
Does anyone know if the Verizon hotspot charging at $20 per month signs you up for a contract or is it month to month with no contract?
 
Month to month. Not a contract thing.

If you thhink you'll need it coming up, get it added for $20, then remove it after the month is over. Not sure how they measure the months.

Any data you use this way is also counted against your monthly data allowance, if any.

I never received that message. Only message I received is that it was drain on the battery (essentially). NOTHING about signing up for a plan. It also mentioned that you can't use wireless and Mobile Hot-Spot at the same time (really? Geez, can't figure out why not?!?!)
 
I was saying that you can turn on stock tethering and connect, but the computer will give you a website that gets you to buy a plan. Unless you do the hack listed over on XDA, then you can bypass this.
 
When I opened the Mobile HotSpot App on my D3, I only received a message about how it will drain the battery. I don't think that VZW can change my plans without my approval (ie, setting me up for a different plan without my consent)

I know all of that, but did you turn on WiFi tethering though? If you do, your wireless device (i.e. laptop) will connect to your phone. Then when you go to IE, FF, Chrome, whatever, it will redirect you to a site saying you must purchase a tethering plan in addition to your data plan to use WiFi tethering from your phone. If you were to use the TBH hack, you can bypass this forced website and tether without VZW knowing...it's illegal, but rather common.
