Help WiFi Hotspot problems

Greetings to all you One S owners.
Can someone help me with a small problem. I cannot get the One S to act as a WiFi Hotspot. Knowing me I'm doing something wrong, so any advice would be much appreciated as I need to use the hotspot with my laptop. This is what I am doing.
1. Clicking on Settings.
2. In wireless and networks clicking on more.
3. Clicking on Portable Hotspot and tethering.
4. putting a green tick in the portable WiFi hotspot box.
My laptop then connects to the phone but the phone does not connect to the internet.
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to connect. My last phone was the Wildfire and that connected no problem.

Is mobile network 'on' on the phone?

You might want to check with your network I know some networks actually charge separately for tethering. God knows why, but they do. On T-Mobile (UK) you need to buy a "booster" to use the phone as a modem,
