This could be a router issue, what is your router?

Netgear WGT624v3.
I tried different channels with no help. I went to CompUSA and bought a model with "extended range" wireless G and it was no better. My laptop can get a signal in my home office with the router in the basement, but my EVO gets nothing unless I am within 30 feet or so.
Am surprised that a hi tech phone like this doesn't have 'N' wireless capability.

You will get much better signal if your router is elevated, not below you and concrete. The nic in here does support n, but its disabled by software. There is a way to change that, but n standard does nothing for your signal range, only increases throughput due to multiple antennas sending and receiving at same time (full duplex).
Also make sure your key is correct, the phone will just continue trying to connect with the wrong credentials without telling you they are wrong.
