Help Wifi Issues?

is anybody facing any wifi issues with the desire s......it anybody getting dropped wifi signals while holding the phone is a specific position......if yes then how bad is the wifi signal drop?

I've heard about the problem, but not come across it myself.

so you haven't encountered the wifi problem in normal use? have you ever had a drop on a weak signal using the phone or covering the upper part.......have you experienced any drop while surfing or texting in the landscape mode? please reply fast as i have to decide whether to buy this or not......wifi issue is a deal breaker for me as i use wifi a lot

I've said all I can - I've not been looking specifically for it, but I read about it in a review.
I've used wifi a fair bit and not noticed it dropping out.

as soon as I go into landscape mode, wifi is gone... go back into portrait and I have full signal strength again. This is much fun when trying to watch youtube :(

This phone might be getting returned, shame really as other than that it's beautiful

I got mine on Sunday and have no wifi drop at all, portrait or landscape. In fact, the wifi stability is a big improvement on my Legend. If a number of people are posting about it, there must be a batch of faulty handsets out there, but it doesn't seem to be an issue in my device.

I have not noticed any correlation between orientation and wi-fi. I have noticed that it gets poor wifi reception generally (compared to my laptop).

When the phone is laid on a solid object in portrait mode such as on your leg or on a table top, the wi-fi strength drops.

Although, the drop isn't enough to cause you to fall off the network, well at least its not in my case as I only use wi-fi at home, where the signal strength is very good.

A similar effect can be seen if you hold the phone with both hands in landscape mode (which I don't!).

After 3 months of problems with my HTC Desire and with HTC customer services (WDS.co), HTC compensated me for all my troubles by sending me a brand new HTC Desire S, however it is gonna have to get replaced because it will not maintain a steady WiFi connection unless it is within throwing distance of the router, not even when the WiFi is set to maximum power in the advanced features menu (press MENU once in WiFi options). My old Desire is being collected by HTC soon because it can't maintain a mobile network signal, but the WiFi is brilliant.

That's a real shame about the wi-fi issue, spoiling what is otherwise a very nice handset. I'm going to have to go for the Incredible S even though I'm concerned about the battery life and lack of haptic feedback compared to the Desire S.

It is a real shame. The wifi reception is pathetic... Where my laptop gets a strong wifi signal, the phone wont even pick it up. I bought mine with the intention of using wifi heavily. I dont think I will be able to return it, as it is a design flaw rather than being broken.

I suppose I could sell it used off of ebay and then consider another phone with better wifi... ugg, what a pain and waste of money.

(although, this is my first smart phone. Im not sure how much this is a Desire S issue vs a smartphone issue because I presume that smartphones are going to have poor wifi reception in general)

When holding the device in landscape with both hands, the reception for WiFi will drop 2 bars but I can still use the phone perfectly fine.

I don't use the web browser in a landscape position so this doesn't affect me at all and for notifications from Facebook or something it'll just pick up from 3G rather than WiFi which is fine for me.

Although for me it's a rare position to get a WiFi drop, it's still a design flaw which is disappointing.

My mate has A Desire S and I really like it but he does have that issue. when your hand is near the top, like below the camera wifi drops alot. it doesn't totally disconnect but it goes down to 1 bar which is just like a little dot. I have witnessed that but as said above it may just be on SOME handsets..

ive had no problems at all with wifi ,always full signal but after reading your question i thought id try holding it different ways to see if i could get the signal to drop.
if i put my hand over the top of the phone and cover it,the signal does drop a couple of bars.
so i suppose that could account for the problem people are having when in landscape mode....

just tried it on my desire and the signal drops on that aswell,it does seem a bit worse on the desire s though

when you use the wifi on you desire s, are you near of far away from you router?

personally, unless i'm literally sat 2 feet away from the router, the signal drops down to low strength.. really any more than a few feet and I lose connection alltogether. Have tried fingertip holding the phone and flipping it to landscape, then resting it against objects, flat on a table etc... no matter what I do, as soon as the phone registers as landscape, it drops signal.. this is making me fear it's not a "grip" issue as some people seem to be suggesting, but if it isn't, I can't imagine what is is

As i said above,i have no problems whatsoever with wifi signal so it cant be a handset problem, unless my desire s is a one off.
Ive just tested it and the signal stays the same (full),wether im in the house, garden or out in the street.
I use a netgear DG834GT router on o2.

can you mention the batch number of your device........maybe that particular batch does not have the problem.......please give it.......i have to buy a new phone and i'm really confused between this and the incredible s

Anywhere in the house - I have a medium sized 3 bedroom detatched house. I have a wireless hub in the back bedroom. Downstairs in the lounge at the front of the house I have no trouble with wi-fi. On my HTC Legend it used to be flakey, even in the next room. It's noticeably better on my Desire S. I think it's because that was smaller. When I purposely tried covering the top of my Desire S with my hand, it did drop off (not my hand, the wifi;) ), but this never happens when I am typing in portrait mode as I only cover the bottom part of the phone. Maybe for guys with bigger hands, this is the issue...

I'm happy to say I don't seem to have this problem with it. If I'm downstairs, where the router is, I always get full signal on portrait, even in a different room. If I'm upstairs in the bedroom, even with the door shut, the signal does sometimes drop a bar or two in portrait mode. It kind of fluctuates between four and two bars, which is not really an issue as I can still view Youtube vids in HQ. BTW, I also tested this with my old Hero and it's the same thing...
So I think it's definitely worth contacting HTC or your vendors if you have an issue with wifi.

As an update on my last post, as long as you hold the device from the bottom corners in portrait there is no drop in signal. You only get it if you cover the antenna on the top corner with your left hand.

I've found this phone to be terrible at auto connecting to wi-fi and maintaining that connection, very annoying coming from an iphone. After reading this thread I've noticed that my hand position greatly affects the wi-fi signal stength. While this isn't great it bothers me less than having to manually connect to wi fi so frequently which is a massive pain in the behind

I am having issues with wifi. It seems to drop the wifi connection quite easily. Laying the device flat reduces the sigal strength massively but if I hold it in my hand upright it seems to be ok.

I had a Wildfire previous to this and it had no issues whatsoever with wifi. Is this maybe something to do with the wireless n chip? Will it be better if I had a wireless n router?

I've actually found that using juice defenders option to turn off mobile data has improved the desire's ability to hold on to wi-fi
