What I'm looking for is free wifi that I can locate when I'm on the road.

Wifi Analyzer from the Market has a setting to show free and paid Wifi differently.

My devices all have an option in the Advanced Wifi menu to "notify when an open network is available".

There are of course security hazards from connecting to unknown and unsecured wifi

Your phone will show password-protected and unprotected wifi signals. Other than public hotspots, though, (like Starbucks, etc.), you aren't going to find many open signals. Almost everyone passwords their routers these days.
