Help Wifi or Data

My phone wifi and data are switch on and I am near to my home wifi.
If I send an email, it use wifi or data?

I reckon it uses wifi if your signal is strong, else it's data. But why turn on data if got wifi? I usually turn off wifi if I am outside the house, otherwise battery keeps draining out looking for signal all the time.

The phone switches data off whenever an active wifi signal is present so in that scenario it will definitely use wifi.

I agree with awiseman, switch your wifi off when not in use or not near a wifi point to save your battery.
