Wifi Tether is out for Droid

ZOMG (edited by Mod) YES YEAH! Sorry Ive been waiting for this for a long time...too bad its for rooted users only though, don't feel like getting into that mess.

Alright I'm going to give it a try I just really don't want to brick my droid especially since today is the last day of my 30 day trial....I won't loose any of my apps though right?

In all your waiting, you never bothered to see how it works on previous Android devices? They all require rooting.
 
Still stuck on the Android SDK...can never get it to load correctly and I just rooted but I can't find a way to install wifi tether now...
 
What is the benefit of rooting the droid? Are there more apps if you root it? (sort of like iphone jailbreak?)

According to the app on the market it will only allow you to go to regular web pages. if thats all you need the best bet is to go with PDAnet free but if you have to do https, ssh, ftp or anything else you would have to buy the full program. Also if you would rather use wifi PDANet doesnt do wifi tethering.
 
so basically https=cant buy things online and cant check bank accounts? those are the major things that use https right?

As well as logging into email accounts, Ebay, some forum sites...etc...I used the free version for a while but decided I needed the secure sites to work as well so I forked over the 30 bucks.

So, does this $30 version also allow me to use the Droid as a wifi hotspot without rooting? Does it only allow http traffic or can I do other things like use it to get my PSP on the internet and possibly do some VPN type things with it?

As was already stated, PDAnet does NOT do wifi tethering. You can connect one computer at a time through USB or bluetooth.

You can do wifi tethering without even using ADB now, just need a rooted phone.

Edit: Oh yeah, in my experience, wifi tethering is faster and more stable, especially compared to pdanet bluetooth, and it's FREE.

The range on the wifi broadcast from the droid is ridiculous too, I was connected between 4 walls and 50 feet in my house.

Did I mention you don't have to pay for the app???
 
I think I remember there being something in the service agreement with Verizon saying not to tether. Does anyone know if they will take any sort of action if they suspect you have rooted your phone and are using it as a wifi broadband modem?

I think it would be awfully suspicious if I started downloading 10gig torrents through my droid. amirite?

There is a large debate about this. I don't know for sure. Read you service agreement.

Yeah its against your service agreement. They only way they would find out is if your using it all the time. I would say to only use it in an emergency, especially not for downloading torrents. As far as rooting that doesn't violate the service agreement as its open source software.

What does the agreement say?

I can say that I've tethered my phone as my primary internet connection since the summer of 2008. I typically use at least 15 gigs/month.
