Root wifi tether settings problem?

hortstu

Android Enthusiast
I'm trying to use wifi tether for the first time here. I have pre 11, because that's what came with Fresh.

I know I actually had it working for about 10 seconds. Then I tried to enable encryption and couldn't figure out the proper settings so I shut it off, put the settings back at unprotected (in laptop) then can't connect. Even though my computer recognizes an excellent connection and my evo detects my computer and says it is connected.

First, what did I screw up in the settings and how do I get this working again, and

2nd, how do I get encryption to work. What are the settings to choose in my computer?

Oh also I toggled 4g in the middle of messing with it to see if my speeds improved. I think that might have hurt too.

Are there any known problems with 3g consistency in the latest fresh?

Thanks.

manage apps, find wireless tether clear data and that should restore app to default. and i believe that the encryption key can be only 8 numbers no more no less

Silly me. Matlock put the answer to my problem in his thread. Here's the link in case you're here trying to solve the same problem.

Look to the middle of section 5 in the first post.

HOW TO ENABLE WIRELESS ENCRYPTION

A lot of us have had trouble getting the Encryption to work on our Wireless Tether. Here is my solution.
(using Version 2.0.5-Pre 11)

STEP 0
Open Wireless Tether and press Settings. Then press Change SSID. Name it to whatever you want.

STEP 1
Open Wireless Tether and Press the Wireless Icon to start tethering without encryption.

STEP 2
Open your Connect to a Network window on your computer and connect to your Device SSID.

STEP 3
Press Menu on your device, then press Access Control. Enable Access-Control by pressing the White bar on the top right. The current connected computers will be listed. Press on the check-box to allow connection of your computer. Apply the setting on the bottom of the screen. Your computer will be disconnected then it will reconnect. Press the Back on your device.

STEP 4
Press Menu on the main screen and select Settings. Check Enable WiFi-Encryption.
Press Change Passphrase. Change it to something simple like 12345678 to start out.
Press Back on your device. Your computer will be disconnected.

STEP 5
Open your Connect to a Network window on your computer. Your connection to your device should be disabled. Right-Click on your SSID (name of your Device) and select Properties.

STEP 6
WINDOWS VISTA: Under the Security tab
The Security Type should be WPA2-Personal (WPA2-PSK)
The Encryption Type should be AES
Then enter your passphrase for the Network Security Key (12345678)

The only thing I would add to this is that I had to wait a minute or two on the vista computer. Then all of the sudden, I thought Matlock's directions didn't work, a popup asked me to id the network as home, work, or public. Since then it had worked fine.
