Root Wifi Tethered- lost data connection and Netflix

Andrstein

Lurker
I've been rooted for a month with my bionic and I'm running the Liberty ROM. I've had my share of "operator errors", but never had any problems fixing them. I fixed this issue too but find it... very...interresting....

Last night I finally decided to tether. Downloaded the wifi tether v3_1-beta11.apk, and ran it. No issues. Tether radio signal icon appeared along with the native hotspot radio icon. I was prompted by the hotspot software that tethering is a pay-for service. I clicked cancel and shut down the wifi tether out of fear. My computer wasn't connected yet so no data transfer took place. A few moments later I started wifi tether again and this time it started alone, without the native hotspot program opening simultaneously. I was satisfied so I set up my laptop and connected fine. I jumped on Craigslist to test out the connection (who knows when the next big curb-alert will sound?) Only transferred ~600kb. After I finished scouring the "Free" section for boxes of old magazines I shut down all connections and went up to bed to watch netflix. Went to play netflix on phone an it's gone! It was there before I tethered, I had watched it earlier in the day. No biggie, maybe I deleted it inadvertently while in toolbox before. I'll just jump on the marketplace and download it. BAM- "app is not supported by my device" it says in the marketplace. I can't redownload it! It is blocking me out!

App wasn't found in root explorer, ROM toolbox, titanium backup, or super backup. I also had no data connection anymore.( I always have 4G in my house.) I restarted the phone and still nothing. I jumped back and forth between various Nandroids and Netflix is on all of them (and works) except the one I just made seconds ago after this issue popped up. I also had data connections on all of the other nandroids I rebooted into. Every time I reloaded the nandroid I made after tethering I lose all data connection and netflix. Funny how they almost go hand-in-hand if you were trying to shut out a hacker from using a huge data-eating program via tether...

Long story even longer- I went into root explorer, went to mnt/sd-ext/backups/ (or something close to that-I can't remember exactly) and found the backup file of netflix on my external sd. I reinstalled it off of that file (doing a full app recovery w/TB failed to bring it back from the dead). Now netflix works and I have a data connection again. Weird? Marketplace still says Netflix is incompatible with my device.

Sorry for such a long post, but I have searched and found nothing remotely close to being like this.

Any ideas/suggestions/insights?

Please be advised that the primary carrier for the Motorola Bionic, Verizon, does not support tethering outside of their pay-per-use client

http://androidforums.com/verizon/455585-verizons-official-tethering-policy.html

Verizon considers the use of tethering data outside of their client to be theft of service. Since this is somewhat controversial, the owner of Android Forums has asked that we not discuss tethering. Sorry!

Update to this issue- tethering is morally wrong. Don't do it or discuss it here. Hopefully this will help others who accidentally made a boo-boo but wish to regain legal access to hotspots and pay for the service in the manner which this site supports by utilizing a pay service to access the data you already pay to use.

I am considering returning my phone to stock so i can "trade my brother-in-law" so I uninstalled (*app name banned*) and after a dozen or so routine reboots in the course of romming and tweaking it seems that I am OK to download Netflix and Pandora, which were mysteriously uninstalled and was blocked from redownloading from Google marketplace. Note that before the uninstall I moved all app, data and install zip files to ext SD card with file mgr. Then unmounted the ext SD card (which is now teeming with this bad,bad illegal data on it - this site and I don't support illegal things. I will delete it later after my battery charges, but haven't yet because I am at work and using my phone to access the internet is illegal at work and this site does not support that. Also note that this was written while on break). Then I reopened the factory installed mobile hotspots app multiple times over a few days (just to make sure that my brotherinlaw could legally access it if he wants it some day, naturally) With ext SD card unmounted I kept reopening the factory mobile hotspot. After a few openings and cancellings of the Mobil hotspots app and the routine reboots it rerecognizes me as a law obiding citizen and I can now download these apps, along with other apps which I had never downloaded but marketplace claimed were not available for my device. Obey the laws kids and enjoy. I'm just glad my"brother-in-law" can now download everything... if we trade.

So I made an account on this forum just to say that I too, like this site and the posters before me, am a law abiding citizen. As such, I felt the need to announce to the previous poster that I found his post rather amusing. Due to these two factors, I have decided to press the thanks button on said post in order to motivate the poster to continue his great service to our carrier and our country.

Glad to meet another law obiding Droid using Droid user! Another update- after repetitive accidental testing i accidentally found that every time this super-Mega bad app is accidentally installed and activated the same thing happens...loss of netflix, Pandora. Unable to reinstall from the market but works fine when recovered (thank god for titanium backup and ultimate. Backup pro). Again, as soon as i realize what has happened I freeze the bad app and run the native hotspot and the unability to download these apps is cleared. I have no real evidence, but I "accidentally" tried this on stock, liberty, and eclipse and got the same result each time. I have gotten my bill which did no mention said activity. It is clearly high enough already ;)
