Wifi to PC file transfer????

If you are really hi tech use adbwireless! You can connect to the phone over wifi with adb and push and pull stuff as well as any other adb command. It's nice for devices where you can't get the usb drivers working such as x64 machines and things like the nook.

Requires root though.
 
Why is that everyone is going crazy inventing some exotic applications (Web, Ftp), relearning DOS (as in case of ADB Wireless), or sending your files to someone's else machine (dropbox) when every Linux/Unix machine can natively network through Samba?

I think that we have to look for and demand better, only than the developers are going to work on it. If we're all happy with the same old thing, we will very soon see 702nd variation of a Web server or Ftp type of sharing application... that honestly stinks.
I hope that in near future Samba becomes an integral part of OS and it's as easy as pushing 'Create password' followed by 'Start sharing' button.
 
SwiFTP works flawlessly. I use windows explorer to copy / paste files to / from my Android phones.

I have a NAS that uses Samba, samba is ok, but SwiFTP works better imho. Samba sometimes locks up or freezes.

FTP via SwiFTP for the win. Simplest way to move files, period.
 
I'm usually trying to get pics and stuff off the phone. I usually just use ES file explorer to samba to my PC and paste the files. I can browse all the files on the PC too and copy what I need.

BTW ftp came long before Samba. It predates linux, windows, unix and DOS. It predates the internet entirely. I used it on the last of the VMS systems in the eighties and it had been around long before that.

I initially want to have the convenience of transferring a file to my phone without having to go to the pc first. So for example, i'm in my backyard and a song comes to my head that i want to listen to.

Would this mean that i need to install a client onto my phone rather than a server (i.e SwiFTP); and a server on my pc rather than a client?

With that said, is there some sort of app/software that does both?

If so, does anyone care to give some solid step by step instructions in "layman terms"? :)

I've already downloaded Filezilla's client/server, swiftp and AndFTP, but i can't figure out what all this "domain/host" name stuff is. Where do I find this info?

So any help would be much appreciated.

Is there a Samba server app that does -not- require root?

Been using SwiFTP with Allway Sync: Free File Synchronization, Backup, Data Replication, PC Sync Software, Freeware, File Sync, Data Synchronization Software to automatically sync/download photos/videos from my phone to the PC.

SwiFTP works great downloading files from the phone.

Problem for me with SwiFTP is when trying to sync TO the phone (like MP3's on my PC to phone), it doesn't properly set/copy the timestamp to the phone (uses the currenttime when creating files) so syncing doesn't work going to the phone.
 
Try OnAir set to http and NetDrive installed on the pc.

This allows you to map a drive to your sdcard. Very handy when useing itunes agent to sync music.

Both are free.

I suppose my only option is to just browse some more around the web. As much as I appreciate the help intended in your reply (if it is to me), I have absoutely no clue what any of that stuff means. Which is a common thing on the web, in regards to explaining how something works to someone. It's like talking to someone in another language. They just assume you understand them. :)
 
FYI, I got Netdrive working (thanks seems like a great app) working on Windows XP with OnAir on a Droid X. The very unintuitive thing about OnAir is you have to use username 'onair' and password is the 4-digit code displayed at the bottom of the screen.

...but this still has the same issue, that files uploaded to my phone don't preserve the timestamp of the file, so can't really use it for syncing... so it's really no better using OnAir than SwiFTP.

I also tried DavDrive, but couldn't get that to connect with Netdrive... but did get it working with Total Commander... but it has the same timestamp issue.

If someone finds a FTP or WebDav or Samba server for android that works -and- preserves file timestamps please let me know. :)
 
When you plug the phone in via usb and mount the card does copying that way preserve the date stamp? If so, do that and use ms synctoy to sync an sd folder with a pc folder. Actually, synctoy may not care about date stamps. It uses a hidden data file to keep track.
