WiiPad?!

If you read thsi thread, you will see a lot of critics of the wiipad/epad It might be worth waiting for reviews. Battery life is claimed lower than an hour with high screen brightness and wifi on. (hoping to be fixed with a future firmware but who knows.)

7" Rockchip DUAL CORE Android Tablet Apad - UK STOCK on eBay (end time 15-Aug-10 13:23:34 BST) but since there have been so many criticts about the product im really confused could anyone advise me on which one to buy please it would be appreciated

Hi darkman,

Don't be too quick to part with your hard earned cash. From what I've read, there's quite a number of imitation pad MIDs available from China which all look exactly the same in most cases. From what I've read here on the forums and about the internet I've learnt of these basic types of pad MIDs from China (commonly called "aPads"):

1. VIA chip 7" pad - avoid these pads with "VIA" chips in them. They are reported to be extremely slow and hard to use because of that. These pads are the cheapest ones available at about $100 USD. They are usually loaded with Android OS 1.5 or 1.6. They will not run Android above 1.6

2. Rockchip 7" pad - this is the same size pad as above, but has better CPU chip in them. They are faster and make them usable. Generally cost about $150 USD. Usually loaded with Android 1.5 or 1.6. AFAIK not upgradeable above Android 1.6.

3. Telechips 7" pad - This is another type of CPU chip available in the Apad MIDs and from what I've read are as good as the Rockchips. I think they cost about the same as well and run the same software.

4. ZeniThink 10" pad - This is one of the latest series being released (mid to late July 2010) and contains a CPU running at 1Ghz. The specs seem pretty similar to iPads and these are meant to do 1080p resolutions and video playback but I haven't read any user comments on what's possible because they have barely began shipping these pads. If previous pads are anything to go off, I wouldn't expect them to playback 1080p res videos. Maybe 720p. These pads run Android 2.1 and WinCE (I read WinCE is horrible and sucks battery time) and they cost about $250 USD.

5. Others - there are other pad MIDs coming out all the time as this is the latest technology craze but I am mainly following the chinese iPad imitations aka "aPads". These forums will probably cover any pad MID that comes out but you just have to read the tablets section every day to keep up to date with the latest releases.

In any case, take your time before you buy. These things are only new and the first ones to come out are not going to be as good as the ones that get released between now and the end of the year. I'm hanging onto my dollars as long as possible before I buy.

PS: I have just noticed that the WiiPad advertised at www.wiipad.us has a ZT-8080 chip, and other 10" pads from AliExpress have ZT-180 chips. Is there any difference between these chips or are they the same thing?

p.s: have you noticed that every picture found on internet of the new Wiipad Neno, shows a strange flat cable going in from the top side of the pad ? What is this for ? maybe it's connected to a pc and they are using the pad only like a monitor ??

Thats a type of mem card from the micro sd slot must be a test hard drive chip thing

It's a serial cable for debug.

It is not the LCD ribbon cable as initially suggested when the video was released.

I have received my tracking number for the item... currently in hongkong

I will report my findings when i receive it

Ordered my wiipad slim plus from wiipad.us ... will let you guys know if and when it turns up and i'll post some feedback on it

My neno has arrived but i wont be home till friday to have a play

anyone else received theres? feedback and views?

OK, so i have my tablet but havent played with it so much as i had to spend time rebuilding my laptop. I will no doubt give a more detailed review of the tablet but all i have now is the below.

Basic user review
----------------
- The plug adapter was a two pin fork which isnt ideal for UK but with a convertor should be ok
- Connection to wifi router works fine
- The screen seems to be a bit of a pain and looks like this device should have come with a stylus of some sort
- battery life is ok-ish but nothing special. (will provide realistic figures during the week)
- Bench marking showed be a process speed of 800hrtz
- Facebook app from the slide me repository seems to crash every so often.
- the touchchreen doesnt seem to work well with my finger nails so im not really having a good experience, really do hope the stylus inmproves this

Can someone with Android and SlideMe expereince please explain to me the process of downloading from slideme, saving to a memory card and copying a shortcut to facebook. Just need to ensure i am doing things correctly before i start to give more detailed views.

Hi veeshy , thank you for the first tests.

Please download some HD video from the net, one at 1080p and one at 720p and look how the device handle this.
I will do the same thing on my Witstech A81e when i receive it.

Mine arrived today but I can't get it to start. All I get is a light blue coloured screen and a sound and that's it. :(

Dude that sucks.

I still have not been given shipment date, its been one week since order placed, I'm getting my friend at work to call them today as he speaks Mandarin and Cantonese to find out where its at.

I believe that the version of Flash released for Android by Adobe requires Android 2.2. I've heard that a Flash "lite" version is available but I don't think it's going to provide nearly the functionality of it's full featured brother.

For example here :
techPowerUp! :: Download HD-DVD Demo 1080p VC-1 DDPlus 5.1

Otherwise search in google with "720p demo" or "1080p demo"

thank you

I cant wait!

Ok, so last night came and went... lol sorry was too engrossed in learning about the device, I'll post some specs of everything tonight, I can answer some things about my short experience so far.

It is indeed a tc902 underclocked to 720mhz, it seems to do cpu scaling, I assume to save battery, this can be anonying sometimes when you bring up the apps panel and it has to change the cpu scale to full as it calls a slight drag when expanding its nothing major.

It has 2gb onboad storage (I'll post full specs tonight)

It is adb shell capable to get root, android itself is not running as root tho when you fire up a terminal emulator on the device it gives you an apps_47 user id.

/sdcard is set to noexec so you have to remount the mount if you want to run stuff off this.

Took me a couple hours to work out how to get a binary working on this as it doesnt seem to run standard arm binarys, but i wrote a simple printf("Hello World\n"); and manged to get this running on it.

As for movies... well I tried a 720p flv under rock player, yes it plays but its laggy as hell and frame drops like a bitch

Standard xvid avi's play fine, the 1080 mkv you posted did not want to play with rock player (and i doubt it would handle it considering the cpu is only 720mhz), and im having troubles finding a player that does play mkv under android.

I will try a standard res mkv tonight. I found a avi hidden away in /nand that had shakira which was a 3min video about 230mb, and the quality was amazing crystal clear with no lag.

Oh the wireless is an atheros ar6000 ( and wpa is done via wpa_supplicant, need to play around to see if can be put into monitor mode ).

The filesystems are mounted with YAFFS2, looking though the dmesg shows some errors in there initrc script (maybe this will be fixed at later date).

Havent played/checked to see if there is gps or if it works.

Camera appears to be low end 1.3mp, its very grainy but response is realtime no frame drop from what i see.

ummm..... yea anyway I'll do more of a post later, if you guys want video I need to find a better recorder then my blackberry if you want quality lol, I'll take pics with like SLR tho :)

Anyways I hope that answers some questions for now, will keep you posted.

If you can, and I know this is not a scientific test, but I would love to see how fast it can type. The aPad iRobot I saw today sucked. The screen, though better than many ChiPod screens I have seen, was not up to snuff with my typing and had many errors. Can you do a review on just typing with your fingers, scrolling, maybe a video? How hard you have to press and how many times to scroll or launch apps. Thanks.

I actually found the typing better than what i had expected, its almost real time but it does pick up all the keys i type, the screen drag in the apps menu sometimes does not respond properly i assume this is because of the cpu scaling catching up im not sure or perhaps its just a badly converted android but for the most part it responds fine, I will try sort a decent video recorder to get some video for you guys :)

Ok sorry i have to retract what i said earlier about the 1080 video, and the flv i just played them from with in side the "photo" app ,and they both played flawlessly with out any screen drop.

Hi guys,

I know i still havent posted some video of the slim plus in action, sorry been a bit busy, but after trying to work out how to firmware up this Ive managed to take it to the latest version #333 which came out on the 26th, It does speed up the ui alot, I will be posting a howto on the wiipad website forum for the owners.
