I think the .com key on the keypad only comes on when you are filling out something that asks for your email address or when manually entering a website address on the internet address bar.
You possibly saw this keyboard the first time you used the phone as you have to set it up to link with your gmail account, so when filling out that part of the screen it will automatically default to that keyboard as it knows an email address is required to be input.
