Wildfire S (VM) in The Philippines

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes.

I will be traveling to the Philippines for a couple months beginning in April and I'm planning on swapping my sim card out with a Smart sim I will buy there so I have continued use of my existing phone. Something tells me I am being naive about this. Any pitfalls I should be aware of? Will it even work?

I swap SIMs all the time. I have two here in Cambodia and whenever I cross into Thailand (about 2x/year) I buy whatever is cheapest. I doesn't cause me any problems.

I think it might give problems if the phone is locked...Am I wrong?
If it's carrier specific it will only work with that carrier isn't it?

I'm not sure what you mean by locked. Perhaps branded?

I don't think Vietnamese phones are branded so there should be no problem for him.
