Will ET4G Support Spints New Data Plan??

We were promised GPS with the Mogul before it was released, but when it was released, GPS didn't work. Sprint was somewhat mum. Then the forums talk was about a class-action lawsuit because of the false advertising. Sprint even dropped the GPS part of their ads for the Mogul. One techie on the forum took his completely apart, and "proved" that it didn't have the neccesary chip and antenna.

Then the XDA people surprised everyone, including Sprint, and got it working. It DID have the hardware needed somehow. A couple months later, Sprint officially released the GPS fix. So who know what is happening here with EVDO Rev. B? We may have to wait and see.....

Wow...the mogul! I used to have that phone and for the most part it was very good to me. There were actually some things I missed about it when I upgraded to the Touch Pro 2.

Anyway, I remember when this happened with the Mogul's GPS. I also remember the Touch Pro 2 problem with the 2016 text message date issue. This was also fixed either on XDA or on ppcgeeks when Sprint couldn't seem to figure out what was going on. I have more faith in their abilities to fix issues than Sprints official fixes. I am not going to panic about this Epic Touch issue yet until I am given concrete reason to.

Sprint never mentioned rev B as part of their sprint vision so I guess we'll have to wait for the October announcement

Well my 14 days will be up next sat so it's going to be tuff to wait it out and knowing sprint even if they roll out the rev b they won't care if the epic is compatible since they will tell you it's a enhancement and not part of your contract. Don't understand why they think the fruit phone will be their savior since big red and blue will carry it but once they start capping unlimited. Sprint will be done. I'm also concerned about this because if I do decide to keep the epic I have a feeling the data speed will be horrendous once the fruit phone is released. It wouldn't be bad if 4g at least worked in my area.

Sprint did mention it in their Sprint Network Vision Video a while back.

Oh OK I must've missed it then. I was reading through their press releases and haven't seen them actually "turning on rev b" on a particular date anytime soon. I just keep seeing a roll out plan of "3 to 5 years"

Sprint Newsroom | Sprint Announces Network Vision ? A Cutting-Edge Network Evolution Plan With Partners Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and Samsung

Some people have been pretty fired up about this topic this week. I thought I'd summarize a few things:

1) We don't know if Sprint is going to deploy EV-DO Rev. B. The Gizmofusion rumor artitle sparked this theory and people have been running with the rumor. Personally, after thinking about it all week and reading opinions from people out there, I do not believe they will deploy Rev. B.

2) While everything available to us out there says the CDMA chip in the Epic4GT doesn't not support Rev. B, we don't know that. Revisions could have been made that were not in a press release. If it turns out that this chip does not support Rev. B, to me, that's even more of a reason that it will not be deployed. Do you really think Sprint would not tell Samsung that they were planning to deploy Rev. B? This phone not supporting Rev. B, with a Rev B. annoucement less than a month later doesn't make any sense.

3) People planning to return the phone over this should think twice in my opinion. It's all rumor and speculation guys. And we really don't know squat when it boils down to it.

I gotta also add that Samsung is one of the three partners helping sprint with this network upgrade. It would look bad if their flagship phone couldn't benefit from the updates

And from one of the most reliable sources from XDA:

" Omg seriously what is wrong with y'all? Sprint is turning on 1x Advanced which will allow simultaneous usage of voice and data. EvDo Rev. B is not in Sprint's plans at all"

For all those who have expressed concern over the Epic 4G Touch and its lack of a rev.B chipset, the Official response from Sprint is as follows:

Official Sprint Answer:
Sprint is committed to delivering the highest quality network experience. Our Network Vision plan will improve your network experience, but it does not include any EVDO Rev B launch. Sprint has evaluated EVDO Rev B and chosen to go directly to 4G connections. Since we are not launching EVDO Rev B, none of our handsets supports EVDO Rev B.

Thank you for your interest in our Network and Chipset Technologies!

Glad they released that statement. It needed to be clarified.

Looks like the Oct 7th announcement is primarily about their LTE plans:
Sprint's LTE build out already underway, new 4G network to launch first half 2012? -- Engadget

If this is true it's good to see that they are planning to use the iDen SMR frequencies for LTE... it should have much better coverage and signal penetration then current 2.5ghz wimax frequencies.

So where does that leave the e4gt? Can it take advantage of that?

Yes, I also saw that post about Sprint using 1x Advanced... very very interesting.

You can also search CDMA2000 on Youtube and learn about the differences of 1X Data, EV-DO, EV-DO Rev. A, EV-DO Rev. B, and Do Adv.

Sprint has confirmed it's not upgrading to EVDO Rev B. It's going straight to LTE 4G. So it no longer matters which phones can use rev b and which cannot

Yup, that was posted by unplugged a few posts up. Now the question is do any of the current phones support LTE... which is doubtful.

The EVO3D has the 800MHz band radio. That makes me wonder if they have LTE plans for it? What other reason would they put it in there? The phone will never access the current iDEN network that's on 800MHz.

I believe that the 800Mhz band on Sprint phones is used for roaming on the Verizon network.

Well since the data coverage is already so bad where im at and they plan on going a whole new route with updating their data structure I feel the only smart thing to do is return the phone. I cant possibly see inversting in a brand new phone that cant take advantage of sprints brand new network.....awesome phone though.

Verizon CDMA is 850/1900.

Now you went and made me look it up: (Please understand that I am not an authority on roaming Mhz., it's just that I usually remember what I read.)

"The current Qchat phones all reportedly do a good job of roaming onto Verizon 800/850 & 1900."

Sprint Community: Qchat phones and CDMA roaming

"Samsung phones have different behavior - when in "roam only", they only roam on the 800Mhz frequency band. There are areas in the US that are 1900mhz only, which means that Samsung phones will not get a signal in those areas."

"Verizon's native network is almost always 800mhz CDMA while
SprintPCS' network is 1900mhz CDMA."
