Will Motorola Make A Photon II LTE?

As disappointing as it is, I would not be surprised if Sprint's new Photon has a front-facing qwerty keyboard. Remember that the Photon was supposed to be as much a business phone as a consumer phone, and what brand is/was most associated with business phones? RIM/Blackberry, and their famous front keyboards. Sigh.

I'm not holding out a ton of hope for the Photon's successor at this point. Both the LTEvo and the GS3 look pretty nifty, and they'll both have the kinks worked out (hopefully!) by the time my upgrade rolls around in August (and by the time a new Photon might be released). Unless the MoPho2 is a turbocharged torpedo, it will have a hard time competing against those two. Sprint must know this, so a "different" phone (aka one with a physical keyboard) may be what they feel is needed to stand out.

But time will tell, and I hope Moto has something special to show us soon.

Although for me, I wouldn't want a qwerty, I would jump at the chance to get this for my family member that's been wanting to go back to a qwerty phone from the iPhone.

One thing that I think could send some shockwaves through the industry would be for them to have a candybar slider (similar to the Palm Pre), with the thinness of the Droid 4 (same measurements as the Photon, as far as thickness) and a 4 or 4.3 inch screen. Now that would be pretty intriguing.

Okay - Looks like Atrix 3 is pretty close to release. The Photon was released 6 months after the original Atrix. Hopefully, that won't be the case this year:

Motorola Atrix 3 'Dinara' powers through the FCC en route to AT&T -- Engadget

This article mentioned a random July date, but who knows if that's true. I do know that it's not that long after a device passes through the FCC that it's usually released (assuming all goes as planned and no set backs)
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/06/14/motorola-atrix-3-release-date-appears-close/

Please Sprint...give us a comparable device as a follow-up to the MoPho!

I hope its not a qwerty. That would be a major disappointment. If it is, I'll just go with the EVO LTE or just wait till the fall for the Nexus devices.

On the other hand, this would be perfect for my younger brother. He's leaving at&t in August and wants to move to Sprint. He's a Blackberry dude and needs a phone with a keyboard.

That's why part of me is that the rumors are wrong and Sprint will carry 2 different Moto superphones, just like the rumors are out for ATT doing so. The non-qwerty version would be my preference, while the qwerty version would be for my family member that misses the physical qwerty.

That better not be the Photon II. If it is, I'm probably getting the LTEvo or maybe the new LG. I'm strongly leaning toward the LTEvo now. A friend of mine has the HTC One X. I played with it a bit. I liked it.

I'm waiting for the lg eclipse release before really deciding. Hopefully, all the superphones will be released by then.

I just bought a used Photon since a) you can't actually get one new anymore b) I was really disappointed with *some* of the features of my Evo 4G but didn't want to blow my upgrade on a phone that would be obsolete by winter and c) I've always had good luck with Motorola phones.

If Sprint came out with a Moto phone that was essentially the Photon but with 4G LTE instead of 4G WiMax I would buy it as soon as it hit the damn store. I (heart) my Photon so much. why do I like it more than the other offerings on the market?

a) lots of built in memory, so I don't get those damn "out of memory" or "out of storage" errors like I do on my Evo.

b) replaceable battery. This is crucial!

c) I can actually run GPS enabled apps in the car without having to carry two or three spare batteries. It irked me to no end that my Evo 4G would be sitting in the car cradle, but running Trapster, a full battery would be dead after 60-90 minutes even though it'd been charging at the AC rate the whole time.

d) unlike the Evo 4G, I can actually listen to music saved on my SD card (yeah, don't get rid of the SD card. I love being able to shove my 64GB SDXC in there and have a huge music library in my pocket) while in the car cradle.

Keep those features, just don't screw it up, and you have a winner.

Wish list:

a) make it so that I can record front facing video from the car cradle (I suppose I could get creative with the Dremel)

b) make it so that I can use an extended battery in the car cradle. I'm not a big fan of things like the otterbox - by the time a phone gets messed up cosmetically the way I use it, it's already obsolete - but would like to be able to just use an extended battery and leave it in there. Maybe use a battery similar to the RAZR Maxx but make it removeable/replaceable? That would be killer.

I'm serious, I'll buy it tomorrow if I can. You listening Sprint/Motorola?

I'm hoping they have two versions. If this is going to be the new Photon and thats it, then its a no go. I will be getting the EVO or I'll just wait till the fall when the new Nexus or other high spec phones come out. Damn I really wanted a new phone for the summer but I guess I'll be willing to wait.

For ur wish list, you can record video with the ffc video while it's in the car dock. It's one of the first things I tried (both rear and front camera videos).

For the second wish list item, I can't really comment if it fit in the car stock properly, but I'm assuming you tried and it's definitely a valid request.

Quote honestly, the only thing I'd want different is a phone as thin as razr maxx, with the 3300mah battery. If there's a 3300mah battery, I don't really care if it's not removable.

HTC came up a little short with the 2100 non-removable, but overall I like the LTEvo. I just hope moto does end up offering a true successor and but just the leaked qwerty phone.

Considering none of the blogs I've seen are commenting that this qwerty if the mopho q that was rumored, I'm pretty optimistic that moto is keeping the true mopho successor under wraps and it'll be a pleasant surprise that nobody is expecting, since all that's being talked about are the atrix 3 and razr hd.

Sprint's Rumored Photon Q 4G LTE Captured on Camera

First article I've seen mentioning this as mopho q, rumored before. I really hope this isn't all moto has on sprint this year.

I have a feeling this is the new Photon. It fits all the rumors we've heard up to this point. I think it's still possible we'll see a second Moto phone on Sprint, but it probably won't appear until the end of the year as one of Google's new vanilla Android phones. That's just a prediction, though. I have nothing solid to back that up.

Myself, I'm still looking at the LTEvo and the GSIII as my last Premier upgrade absent any official word from Moto.

OK, if this is the new MoPho, I'm eliminating it. That QWERTY is a deal breaker with me.

I'll be looking at the LTEvo or the LG superphone that is rumored.

I don't care of the GS3 comes with a free gold bar. I'll never own a Samsung again.

If it's a decent phone and has better specs than the Photon, I could upgrade to this and just never actually use the qwerty keyboard. It is still possible to use it like a full touch screen.

Yes, but it would remind me too much of the Epic. There's more to break on a slider. They become loose after a while usually. And I want a thinner phone. I'm sure that QWERTY won't be thinner than the original MoPho.

I like the size of the LTEvo. If Motorola would drop the QWERTY and make the phone thinner with a larger battery with LTE, they'd have a winner for me.

I know it can be used as a full touch screen. However, for me it would just be another piece of hardware that could break that I'm not even using. It would be pointless.

Form matters as much as function for me for the phone to be practical. I'm hard on my phones and I know I'll be dropping that phone. And I won't use a case because I hate the bulkiness. I've dropped my MoPho more than a few times. It has scratches around the sides. The screen is perfect and it runs like new. A slider will most likely not be durable enough for me.

I'm still not convinced this will be the only Motorola phone that'll be released on Sprint.

Citizen Coyote brought up a great point. Maybe, Google is lining up Motorola as the next Nexus phone, which will pretty much be a follow-up to the Photon, except bigger screen, better battery, hopefully the kickstand...I mean, Motorola is officially a Google owned entity, so maybe not having a "true" follow-up to the current MoPho is for a specific reason. This would be a reason that'd be well worth waiting for.

Google has stated that they will not show favortism to Motorola and it will have to compete for being the flagship Nexus device just like everyone else.

I think the Photons size was perfect so if it remains of a similar size or the same exact size I would be happy. The thin phones feel flimsy and breakable in my gorilla sized hands. I also prefer my phones in the otterbox commuter case made for them. I'm not very hard on my phone as it's only been dropped a few times and it was almost always onto a soft surface.

That's my theory as well. Plus, its rumored not to be only one but multiple Nexus devices from different manufacturers. As much as I want to do my upgrade now, I have the sneaking feeling that I should wait. There will be a lot of choices from some heavy hitters this fall.

Yup. I'm totally aware of Google's statement...but, do I believe it 100%...not really. To me, it was partially a PR statement made, just to calm the waters of other OEM's getting upset about the purchase.

I actually prefer whatever form factor is easier to hold and although I love the size of the Photon, I'd love it more if they were able to make it with a bigger screen, but thinner.

If we look at it realistically, HTC got the first stab at making a Nexus phone. Then Samsung last year...So, maybe Google was just doing a "round robin" type of deal where every year, they'd have a new manufacturer create the Nexus. This is just theoretical, but I wouldn't be surprised

I cant say I'd want a bigger screen. Obviously to add some screen length for the soft key buttons with the switch over to ICS, but I think 4.3 of "usable" space is a sweet spot for me.

Someone commented about sliders loosening up and I just handled my buddies Droid 2 that he's about to upgrade and its still pretty taught. He constantly uses his qwerty too.

Hasn't Samsung had it for 2 years now?

If Google just hands the nexus contract to Motorola every year, the other OEM's are going to get pissed off.

Well if the rumors are true, Google is going with 5 different devices this year. I'm sure Samsung, HTC, and Motorola are a lock. This is to show that Google isn't favoring Motorola over the others.
