Will my set up plan work?

Hi all-
I am not new to android ( hacked a wpdn and a Hs7 ). I am definately not a techie, but I can read and follow directions well and am not afraid to try things. I have been playing around with android since the summer. But now I am waiting on delivery of a x10 mini pro- unlocked. I have been reading tons of stuff on hacking this cute little device so I can set it up for my college student daughter who is not into hacking gadgets herself. I also noticed things moved very quickly on this upgrade once things started to roll. I just want to know if my plan below is workable. Thanks for reading and any comments will be appreciated!

This is what I would like to do-

1. Update to 2.1 via official channels using Sony's update service- not pc companion. ( has this come to the east coast in the US yet?)
2. Root with z4root.
3. install link2sd and add apps I think will be good for her. (I have already prepped an sd card with a secondary partition- did it in my computer, not in phone. Card was formatted in fat 32 with secondary partition also fat 32 and both primary partitions).

She doesn't really need 2.2 android. A more stable OS is better for her. She is moving from an lg xenon so android will be very different for her. After we got the xenon found out she couldn't use it for email account in school. :( It died after a year and was replaced by att. This one lasted 6 months before acting up. :( I'm hoping for better performance with this x10 mini pro. :D

does anyone know if this wil work on a new OOB mini pro?
