I recently got a Galaxay 4s and now have a somewhat perfectly working Galaxy 2S that I was thinking about rooting.
You see, one of the reasons I updated this phone was that at one point it fell in a deep puddle and was totally submerged.
I turned it off super fast and took it apart. I then sprayed the living heck out of it with CRC and then blew it out with compressed air. Rinse and repeat several times.
I must have done a pretty good job (99% good) because after that it worked pretty well. But all of a sudden it stopped being recognized by ANY computer it connected to (here's the missing 1%). It would take a charge just fine but no USB device recognition. I even tried a rolled back Samsung driver or an older version of Kies Air that it USED to work with. And yes, I tried USB debugging mode. I even tried another person's S2 on my computer and it connected fine. So it HAD to be my phone. With that ability gone, there was no way to update the OS.
So I got the Galaxy S4 and I'm loving it. But this old reliable Galaxy S2 is being kept around as a spare reader, WiFi web browser and game playing platform. I was wondering if bt rooting the phone if I could over come the necessity of using Kies Air to update the OS? I was told that once a smart phone is no longer connected to the carrier, you won't get updates. Is that true? Is there a way do download the update via WiFi to the phone and THEN apply it?
