Will the Eris be able to run 2.2?

Not again, this happened with 2.1. Everyone wondered if the Eris would run 2.1, and some were even convinced it couldn't. This is ridiculous. If anything 2.2 would run faster and better than 2.1 on the Eris, just like 2.1 compared to 1.5. Just because it's a newer OS doesn't make it slower, it's not Windows.

I may have my Eris overclocked to it's max potential, but I have yet to see a dramatic decrease in my battery life or performance, even when using live wallpapers. Even if the battery WAS an issue, is it really running much better on 1.5 or 2.1? The Eris is a smartphone and like all smartphones with tiny batteries, you'd be lucky if it lasted you a day anyway.

Solution: Extended battery. Now is 2.2 possible? Yes. Optimal: Now it is. :D
 
I'm convince that Eris owners will see an update "patch" or two for the current 2.1 OTA, but probably not the 2.2 which seems to require more resources.

That was laggy and jumpy? Looked pretty smooth to me. He's using a camera at around 15 fps so its pretty hard to judge if it is running laggy. He's probably running VanillaDroid (which has live wallpapers) so it doesn't even have Sense. And apparently it works, because the evidence is right there in that video. Your just too stubborn to admit that your wrong.
 
This list of features doesnt look like they are CPU intensive.. Eris will be able to run it..

But because we are EOL, I doubt verizon will take the time..

I don't know; it looks to me like the Eris is pretty much at its best with no more features than it has now.

I'm not sure, but I'm thinking that the 2.2 would be edging just a bit closer to lag and crash territory for the Eris cpu and display circuitry.

Wondering about battery life, as well.
 
Does anybody even read all the evidence that Froyo will be slimmer than Eclair? I think every Android phone should be able to run it. I only wonder how long the Sense integration will take. Looks like Google stepped on HTC's toes with their new phone/web/app drawer button.

I really like it. HTC's response to Froyo will determine whether or not I ever get another Sense phone.
 
I'm running what's called "Tainted Vanilla" which strips down a bunch of the aspects of Sense and makes it a more Vanilla 2.1. With the speed an effeciency my phone is operating at now (Overclocking probably helps, too. and NO task manager) I can safely say that the Droid Eris could probably easily handle 2.2.

I have no idea what "joke" could have been discerned from my post you just quoted, let alone one about a penis. :rolleyes:

And what has the Nexus One got to do with the Eris?
 
Seriously IF Verizon and HTC release 2.2 for the Eris that would make me reconsider replacing my phone so quickly after the 2 Year contract finishes. The speed improvements, better exchange support, full flash support and the apps2sd like feature are enough for me to hold onto my Eris for a bit longer than i planned.

I'm still wondering if the Eris can handle the 2.2. I'm wondering less than I was at first; there seems to be consensus that 2.2 is "slimmer" than 2.1.

I'd just like to see data showing that (as I asked somebody else a few posts ago).

I'll look around..

The consensus is that it can, based on what little we know. But i agree without any data or proof that it's actually running and running as good as, or better than 2.1 on an Eris or comparable we really don't know for sure yet.
 
According to Adobe though the processor is just under its minimum requirements for Flash use. They want 600Mhz+

Indeed. And this forum is full of posting from Eris users who have lag issues and other signs that what is in the device now is using up resources close to its limits.. again, for many users, but not all (mine and others on 2.1 is snappy and crisp, as was 1.5).

So.. data, yes.
 
There are a couple things against the Eris ever seeing 2.2

1st: It seems like the Eris will be fazed out soon in which case why would they continue to put the time/effort/money in to support it?

2nd: From what I've heard 2.2 comes with flash 10.1 which I have been told will not be able to run on the Eris.


I would be extremely surprised if 2.2 ever came to the Eris but I'm far from being an expert or an insider so take it for what it's worth (probably very little). Personally I got tired of all the lag and bugs that presented themselves when my phone got 2.1 (my brother, mom, and dad all had the same issues since the update). I liked it much better with 1.5 but didn't feel like taking a step backwards do I bought an Incredible. However I know that buying an Incredible is not an option for most people so I hope I'm wrong and Verizon/HTC/Google continue to support the Eris and find a way for it to run more smoothly.
 
I suppose the one big possible problem is that flash support could be a critical, central part of the os. If that happens, I think we're screwed. Hopefully it's a optional feature like live wallpapers.

And Frisco... sorry, I have a dirty mind.

I know there isn't any data available, yet. I just hate to see people ensnared by the old pc logic that a new os will always place a higher demand on system resources. 2.1 made my eris run faster, and they say 2.2 is even faster still. Why wouldn't I believe them?

If I had to guess, we'll get Froyo without Flash 10.1. Last I checked, Flash 10.1 on Android required an ARM Cortex based processor like the Moto Droid, HTC Incredible and Nexus One phones.

Much like what was done with Live Wallpapers in 2.1 for the Eris, they'll just strip it out.
