Will this be rootable on Verizon?

HanSolo

Given how Verizon is the Scrooge of rooters everywhere, does anyone have any clue, based on past Samsung releases on Verizon, whether this will be rootable?

Based on the track record, it will probably be rooted, then the exploit will be patched, and then repeated like a game of cat and mouse. A bootloader exploit is a whole different game; they're still looking for a way to open up the S4 bootloader again last I heard.

I hate to be the nihilist here, but...

Issue being that - I firmly believe - the days of rooting and ROMming are rapidly coming to an end. Sad indeed, to a degree.

The carriers don't like it so they mandate encrypted bootloaders. Google wants Android not messed with, so they patch root exploits as fast as developers find them. Manufacturers put all these "features" on top of Android and don't want them removed.

That makes the carriers, manufacturers and Google all happy with each other, and US unhappy with all of them. But since they essentially have us over a barrel (we want Android, need a phone and we need phone service), they win.

Other than options and customizations that Android is capable of and doesn't come stock on a device, Android really is maturing to a point that the reasons we used to root & ROM aren't really there anymore. Now it's a matter of just getting rid of bloat and skin, tethering, or adding customizations that don't come stock. And they don't want us doing that. Guess who loses?

:(

Very well stated Chief. We can only hope the devs will keep working thier magic as long as possible.

I have to disagree on this one point, Chief. Google's "Google Play" and "Developer's" edition phones are evidence that they at least feel for those who want unlocked bootloaders.

Unfortunately, the carriers make it impossible for many of us to enjoy the unspoiled fruit (they don't subsidize these edition phones, and I will soil myself if we see a true nexus device in Verizon again).

The problem lies with the control freak carriers.

I can live without root, though, as long as we have apps like foxfi and Nova launcher.

My biggest qualm is Tasker and Titanium Backup. I'd like to keep both of those functional for various things, but as far as I know, both will require root for the things I'd like to do. Tasker's biggest use for me is disabling the lockscreen at home, or if I'm using certain apps (for easier/safer use with navigation/music while driving). Titanium Backup is less important, but I do like being able to easily back up apps+data.
