Will UK Desire HD work on Japan Docomo network?

UMTS is standard HSPA right guys? and thats pretty much standard for the most of europe? so i cant see why not that it'll work in japan, but you might want to double check that lol

Yes UMTS is the underlying technology for HSPA just as GSM is for GPRS and EDGE. But it's not that simple. Different world regions use different frequencies which muddies the water a bit.

The Desire HD's UMTS works in the 900 and 2100 MHz bands.

According to this Wikipedia page Europe uses 900, 1800 and 2100.

In Japan, NTT DoCoMo uses 800 and 1700 - E Mobile uses 1700 and Softbank uses 1500.

You might have a problem. If you can find a UMTS network in Japan that uses 900 or 2100 then you will be ok but initial checks seem to show otherwise.

This could be academic because the mobile phone networks are down in some parts of Japan because of the recent events there.
