Windows 10, Yay or Nay?

I still have a hard time believing that they went through all that trouble just to make a system that's almost as good as their eight year old champion. Thanks again for coddling me...
 
I'm pretty much stuck on 10. It's not an improvement over 7. It's not that bad but it's certainly got those moments when you want to chunk your machine outside!
 
I spend as little time in Win add I can... So maybe an hour, hour and a half at most: I need to be in Win to download music I've bought on Amazon and ebooks from same.

Then I import it all into Linux for use.

If you're firing it up that rarely, I imagine it's spending a good deal of time (and resources!) searching for and downloading updates. That could also explain some of the slooooowness. ;)

BTW, regular windows updates won't overwrite manufacturer-specific drivers... So I'd certainly take the time to confirm the driver issue.

[emoji90] I solved that issue by going into settings/F-U Wynn doze/WiFi BS and putting all access points to "metered data" so it thinks you're on a hotspot and won't spend all the time & resources looking for crap you don't want. Really ridiculous & unnecessary. [emoji49]
Every update that the WTF OS released has actually been more security locks and making usage less optimized for personal choice. Win10 is gonna be viewed as a big failure by almost everyone except MS. [emoji41] Did'ja know ya gotta go into near hidden settings to install non MS drivers?! Far overreaching the needs of MS to run anything

When they said windows 10 was going to be the last version of windows... I don't think I really understood what they meant... based on the article (thanks for that btw) we're going to get the creators update at the start of the year, and another one at the end.


I like windows 10, but I am having nostalgic feelings for how stable (unchanging) windows 7 and windows xp were......

Create an account and give "Toggle Tweaker" a try. BE SURE to get it from MDLF as there are many phony (virii) versions about. You can disable updates altogether among other neat things (like disabling Telemetry).

Better yet, use the LTSB edition if you're up to a fresh install. You'll need to Google the checksum to find an ISO, but you'll never look back once you do. You'll need to read a few other threads over there to learn how to re-arm it every 180 days, but super easy.

EDIT: And don't forget "Classic Shell" for a more Win7 like experience ;)

"windows 10" is going to be the last "version issued", but it will be continually updated and morphed into something else as time goes on.... and it is already loading up with Linux modules to perform a lot of the under the sheets work.
 
Long Live Windows 7

As the release of Windows 10 approached, I couldn't have been more excited. When it finally appeared, I backed up 7, just in case, and installed 10. Unbelievably, I didn't like it, but figured it was just me. So I restored 7, where everything makes sense. Over time, I've tried 10 about six times, each time telling myself that I'd finally stick to it this time. I never did. Windows 7 just looks tidier, behaves more reliably and seems like the best operating system Microsoft ever created. Sad but true...​

Yup. Slow and disgusting. Don't know what they were thinking with Win10. I was excited for 8 but didn't bite into it, and anticipated that 10 would be a FPOS too. My 8 YO Win7 Presario with 8GB RAM being the only upgrade will blow the panels off of any decent win10 machine I've tried. That's al we have at work now, and with all of the extra corporate security added to that, they're unbelievably slow...

Mainstream shit all around seems to be going south quickly, Android included. I'm so fed up with the way Android is heading that I went back to BlackBerry. BBOS10 definitely needs a lot of work, but at least I can run my daily Android apps. Certainly leaps and bounds over Windows 10 mobile, which I was very disappointed with also.

Ugh, tell me about it... We're still on Win 7 at work, but the added security and never-used VPN and chat software just drag the whole system down to nineties-level utility.

... and me an three other coworkers had the opportunity to buttonhole and harass an IT guy yesterday about the quality of our local network. He just couldn't believe that the whole network would lose connectivity on a semi-regular basis, nor that the problem hadn't been suitably resolved for years.
 
I have windows 10 32bit on my Aspire One D225E with 2GB of RAM i installed it using the upgrade tool and flashed it using a usb i had to use refus to create a bootable usb from win 10
 
Wow, never really heard too many folks favor KitKat. Functionally pleasing, but the pure KitKat UI look is aesthetically nauseating. Plus the one/two finger drag-down bar was a pain. Only android I own (of many) that I adore, is my Nexus 5 running Lollipop. Perfection. I would still use it as a daily but the battery consumption is ridiculous. Marshmallow on the N5 did miracles for standby battery but made screen-on battery life even worse than Lollipop. Phone is perfect otherwise :(

Used the whole evening trying to upgrade win 10 (1607) to Creator (17xx), but no go... WU is showing "coming soon", win10 creator upgrade tool downloads, verifies and updates until around 80% it gives a message that the windows isnt the latest one (build 1607) and there is a newer version (17xx). Well, no sh*t sherlock! That i was trying to do when used "you".

After multiple trials and errors, i tried Media Creation Tool, and "upgrade now" (not the ISO option). The same sh*t happened again. I give up...

Hmmm. My 12 year old said he'd upgraded almost straight away to the Creators Edition (even though I'd said 'wait a week or so'. But @ I was impatient Dad ...' ... hey ho ...). Went for it myself, downloaded the upgrade tool (forget it's name), clicked on it and all just 'happened'. No need to backup (though I should have done) and all works as before (before on W10 that is).

Don't see what all the fuss is about. Was on Win XP Pro for years, finally got a PC that would run W10 and just 'tweaked' the way I work. I have nothing on my desktop and use the Windows key to access the full screen start menu which I've edited to contain my most used apps/folders/etc and all is sweetness and light ..... :-)
 
WIN10 64 bit and never going back

We are rolling out win10 at work as we speak and has gone remarkably well
Soon ditching our VPN for direct access and next pushing out intune
 
I use a MacBook for all my work. And this is why....

A USB stick that's been in a school classroom PC. Two hidden Windows EXEs, 1.2MB each, which is some worm or virus that's on some of the school Windows 7 PCs. And I know a few other foreign teachers also use Macs or Linux for same reasons.

I do use a Windows 10 tablet for games sometimes, but don't let it anywhere near my work stuff.

That reminds me of the time a large number of computers in my high school had a virus that was being spread around by usb drives. They wound up making us have to scan drives on a laptop in the library that was running Microsoft Security Essentials to make sure they were clean before plugging them into other computers in the building. I mostly use Ubuntu these days, though I do have a Windows VM laying around if I need it
 
This is what I often see, DO NOT "UPDATE" Windows!! Because if it was updated, the Windows Genuine Advantage activation kicks in.

And this on a school classroom whiteboard and podium Win 7 PC. Which states in Chinese "EVALUATION COPY", "THIS COPY OF WINDOWS IS NOT GENUINE", along with black background, because it's not activated and is pirated.

At the end of teaching session I just delete any EXEs I find on USB sticks with the MacBook.
