Windows 8.1 Preview is Here

I will likely test this in a VM (downloading the iso right now) but that's about it. I'm not upgrading 8 to a preview and then end up reinstalling to upgrade down the road. Even dealing with VMs, reinstalls are a pain

Well, that’s how it’s been with MS... every other OS is wonderful, so your statement should be correct.

My other friend believes that too. However I do like Windows 8 and windows 8.1 will be a good upgrade. This is the future of Windows, and touch screens are the future of computing.

For mobile computing I'm pretty sure I'm seeing it now, especially in this part of the world(China and SE Asia), and unfortunately for Microsoft it seems to be a future with Android and Apple.

For desktop computing not so sure about touch screens, there's still an issue with something called "gorilla arm", that goes right back to the days of light pens.

Touchscreen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The dictionary of hacker slang defined "gorilla arm" as the failure to understand the ergonomics of vertically mounted touchscreens for prolonged use. By this proposition the human arm held in an unsupported horizontal position rapidly becomes fatigued and painful, the so-called "gorilla arm". It is often cited as a prima facie example of what not to do in ergonomics. Vertical touchscreens still dominate in applications such as ATMs and data kiosks in which the usage is too brief to be an ergonomic problem."

So basically OK for a kiosk or an ATM, not so good for prolonged productivity usage. For me, I think the mouse will be here for a while yet.

Edit:

I've seen the Win 8 style touchscreen interface been used in two applications so far. One is airport self service check-in terminals, and the other is the karaoke machines they have at some KTVs. It seemed to be quite effective here, but then these are both kiosk type applications.

i run win 8 on a muli monitor desktop. it runs great. i put it on my laptop and it was junk on a single monitor. ive always used the windows key on my keyboard so the lack of a start button doesn't bother me that much. windows 7 wouldn't run right on my system but 8 does. i cant wait for 8.1 tho it should be good :) o and btw if you leave a file explorer window open at shutdown, when you boot back up it will bypass the metro ui and go straight to the desktop :)

Guess I will have to take your word for how well or not this is. I have no plans of leaving Linux for Windows. As far as touch screens go I really hope that they stick with tablets and maybe smaller screens such as laptops (Not the big 17 in ch ones) reason being that I think having anything bigger will be counter productive. not to mention the gorilla arm that mike spoke about.

I have that windows 8.1 preview in my windows. I was about to try it but I refuse to do because when I read their FAQ, that that windows 8.1 preview isn't the final windows 8.1. So they are offering that for feedback sake. If user will be satisfy more or if there is anything to improve. As many user complain about the start button in windows 8.

Out of curosity didn't Windows XP get alot of hate when it came out? Maybe Windows 8 just needs more time I don't use Windows but I hate for it to become the next Vista or ME( Never used it be it seemed to be the Vista of 2000) :(

Not to my recollection. It did take some getting used to, but its popularity ramped up pretty quickly and lasted well over a decade. Definitely and instantly regarded as superior to its feeble predecessors.
