Help Windows 8 64bit usb drivers for Thunderbolt?

I have a new to me Thunderbolt that I would like to start "talking" to with my Windows 8 computer but I can't install the HTC drivers .exe as there is a compatibility problem. If I could extract the drivers from the .exe I would just install them manually but I don't know how to do that. Should I try and install HTC Sync just for the drivers, then uninstall it? Which version should I use? I can't seem to find that information on the HTC site. I've searched everywhere but it looks like HTC doesn't support the Tbird anymore??

There are no drivers for windows 8. Google search windows 7 drivers for HTC and use those. Make sure you pick x86 or x64 depending on your setup.

Extract the drivers to a folder, then connect the phone and then windows device manager and find the phone listed then install drivers manually

Where am I supposed to find it listed in Device Manager? Under disk drives it has HTC Android phone, but when I try to update drivers it tells me the best one is already installed.

I installed HTC sync...and I'm hoping the right drivers were installed as well. I'm planning on rooting the phone. If I uninstall sync, will the drivers be left in my system?
