Windows 8 (and 8.1)

I don't need this aggravation. Is there any downside to ignoring notifications and staying in Windows 8?

I tried that with my Zenbook and the reminder continued popping up several times a day. I have an old Dell on Windows 8 and I just feel like it will screw it up. This laptop is designed to factory reset from dvd and the dvd player is broken. It works fine though and is dedicated to home security. I don't do anything else on it and never shut it off so the operating system doesn't even matter. Definitely not worth the hassle finding new drivers etc. It wasn't easy getting the update to work on my new Zenbook. I don't like my chances on the Dell limping dinosaur.

Think eventually might have to upgrade to 8.1, presumably Microsoft will end updates and support for 8.0 in the future. They've been supporting XP for all this time, but only if you've got Service Pack 3. 8.1 is basically a Service Pack release.

I never had to reinstall drivers or go to Windows store for a service pack. They should have made this a Windows update.

Content with W7HP, I wouldn't even want it for free, unless I can install it on a flash, just for laughs...

Don't, it isn't even funny - just sad. When the next windows designed for desktops without touch to be used in business those of us stuck with 8 should get a free upgrade and an apology.

windows 8.1 is far better than windows 8,7,xp,vista and even better than linux versions like ubuntu, backtrack, kubuntu etc..I like windows 8.1 and this is the current operating system of my laptop.

FTFY ;)

We have a number of PCs all Linux or dual booting with Win7 or 8.

Although, for the amount I use it, I may as well ditch MS altogether.

well i my experience with windows 8.1 has been ok so far, but.........

getting was more of a nightmare.

so there was a notification about upgrading to windows 8.1 and it intrigued me......o i went ahead and upgraded without thinking about updating the drivers first.....big mistake.

my laptop would not boot up all the way. it got to a black screen after logging in and nothing else......getting to boot into safe mode was almost impossible to do. no matter how many times i pressed the f8 or f10 button.....nothing.

i had to call microsoft and i even called samsung about this and they both sent me a windows 8 cd, since my laptop originally came with it.

and a week later, i am now up and running with windows 8.1 and i must say, my pc has never run better and it seems to boot up way faster then in windows 8.

Most people don't need it anyway.

Lordy knows I sure have tried to adopt that mindset. I've got Linux Mint running alongside W7HP and five more distros on flash drives; ubu, kubu, lubu, Zorin and Netrunner. But none of them has persuaded me to ditch Windows 7. I might if I had 8, but that's just conjecture.

There must still be many things you need to do on windows.

Not exactly need, but severely want. Just the doodad apps that I've grown accustomed to over the years and have not found easy duplicates in Linux, as discussed here. And even if I did find them, that still isn't reason enough to ditch Windows.

Im hoping for a windows for business or windows 9 that dumps metro concept entirely. I also have no use for a microsoft store built into ui.

Yep. About a year ago, I had a W8 PC for one whole day... couldn't return it fast enough. Bought a W7HP CD and that's where I have to stay until W9, assuming they will have learned their lesson. Meanwhile, I tinker with Linux Mint on the side.

It's fine for a tablet. Just don't get the point of forcing it on a desktop. I have a touch screen laptop and I find I seldom use touch functions on that either.

Was planning to use 7 forever, but my Toshiba died this week, so I ordered a new Asus laptop. It arrived at the office this morning and is sitting on my desk in the box. I'm going to open it up and start my windows 8 experience tonight after work.
