After doing an SBF if you plan on keeping the ROM the way it is then no it's not neccessary. If you are doing it to then put on a new ROM then by most instructions after you have flashed the ZIP files for the particular ROM then before booting into the ROM you should wipe cache, data and dalvik. The (non-technical) reason as I understand is that sometimes certain bits and parts of the previous ROM get left behind and can cause some things not to work properly.
In any case if you are flashing a custom ROM it is always best to follow the directions to the tee.
