Wireless charging on GS3

Any deatled info on this feature?
I am sorry if it had been discussed before, but after the new videos, there has not been much said about this great feature.
 
What I have seen is that it is no difference than current wireless charging for most devices on the market. Replace the back with an induction coil containing one and sit it on their brick.

Sorry I am not excited about a Samsung version of what Powermat and others are already doing.
 
From the looks of the video it doesn't have to sit anywhere. It charges while uou hold and use it. However the range doesnt look to be more than 3 feet.
 
The big deal is.....I think you don't have to buy an optional back door for this wireless charging like in the past. You will have to purchase an optional mat to lay it down on but the re-charging feature is already built in. That is what I have gathered from all the hype so far. If it could charge anywhere with 1-3 meters would be awesome but I don't think that is going to happen. I use a lot of extended batteries so I don't know how that will effect me. I like the wireless feature.......hope it works well.

Lol. that would indeed be cool, but I think the potential difference (i.e. voltage) needed to bridge such a large gap would be so large that you would have lightning bolts flashing across your room from charger to phone. Scary! :D

You must be thinking of Jacob's ladders and Tesla coils. That's not how induction charging works. Induction charging works through electromagnetism.

Yes, after some reading, seems a mat is needed. So, what is the purpose? I.e if the mat or dock has to be plugged in, what is the the difference there? Then, how hard is it really to set the phone in a dock vice a matt? Really, the dock holds it up to view, the mat lays down on it's back. To dock my Droid X, is about literally 1-2 seconds and usually 1. Not sarcastic, but what is the advantage, 1-2 seconds, or am I missing something?

Also the video in the background shows the phone being laid on it's back on the charging pad.

Also, it seams to me that the electomagnet would have to be one powerful SOB in order the charge a battery from 3 to 6 feet away. Maybe an electical engineer can shed some light on this.

Another point, how many times have you been talking on your phone or playing a game, and you were warned about the battery getting low, so you plugged your phone into your charging cable and kept on talking or playing? If the phone must be laid on it's back to be charged, I suppose you could enable the speakerphone option and continue talking but to continue playing a game would be much more dificult.

So no, I don't see any advantage to wireless charging other than a "coolness" factor..... unless of course it will indeed charge your phone from a distance of upto 6 feet or so.

Time will tell regarding this feature,
 
Yea take back what I said, I thought inductive was working better than I thought. So far current ones require a little connecter to your USB port. That is annoying and gets in the way. If this is just a different back about the same size I will get it if I get the phone.
 
The GSIII's wireless charging system is using Resonance Charging, which is why they said it was a first for Cell Phones.
 
For people who keep asking what the big deal is, I know of one use. This allows for a method to charge that doesn't wear out the micro usb port on the phone. It's an all too common issue for smartphones to have them wear out and not work.

Funny you say that, the port on my HTC Desire has just started playing up :/

The wire on my HTC Desire frayed and stopped working about 6 months into a 2 year contract. Believe me sitting it on a mat is better.
 
It's probably going to cost an additional $50-100 for the mat/dock, and it'll be out 4 months after the phone is released. Totally not worth it, I'd rather spend that money on a nice 64GB sd card or the hdmi dongle!
 
Was hoping that they had really changed the wireless charging, but this is exactly the same as what i had on my palm pre about 3 years ago, so am i missing something? This was an official palm product as well not an after market one called palm touchstone. All you done was put a new back on the phone, didn't add any thickness to it what so ever then dropped it on the "touchstone". Got it free with when I took out the contract. Was actually pretty useful to be honest. Only needed to use the cable when i wanted to transfer files or wanted to take personal calls and the battery was getting low. Was great using it as an alarm clock, all blurry eyed and not ragging on the cables if ya get what i mean, just picked it up.
