Wireless Emergency Alerts

I got a flash flood warning yesterday
 
what I find offensive is that "presidential alerts" are always enabled.....as if I give a rats ass what sort of propaganda they want to push to my phone without my consent.

weather alerts are REAL on the other hand so I can understand their need....but those CAN be disabled

is this common across all android or is it a government mandate that all carriers and providers do it? (or else lose their grace with the FCC)

Presidential alerts are to alert the public to national emergencies or disasters such as terrorist attacks...nort propaganda. My understanding is that newer devices have these alerts (I believe mandated by the FCC) and that the supposed goal is to have a more informed public about various emergencies.

Yes, I had two emergency alerts come through last night because there were tornadoes in the area. The sound was the same as what you hear on telly. I had the volume on the phone turned completely off, too, and it still made the sound. What really annoyed me was that I could not get the message off of my phone's screen each time. I tried over and over and over and over to get rid of it, and finally I was able to, but I was unable to simply and quickly delete it like I would do a normal text message. How can I get rid of these messages off my phone screen right away after receiving them?
 
I have never received one of these. We have a flash flood warning going on here right now, and all my co-workers on Sprint with Android based phones got the warning, but I didn't. I never got them on my last EVO V either. I have all alerts checked except test.

I am wondering if there is some flag flipped on my account or the entire KC area for that matter. My wife never gets any on her One V either.

I live here and I got 2 warnings today . A flash flood warning at like 4AM and an Amber Alert at like 2PM. This das the first time I ever got any, so it was weird.
 
I live in the Hudson Valley of NY and I received a severe thunderstorm alert last month (first time ever seeing an alert pop up) My friend who has the iPhone 5 on sprint also received the alert the same time as me.

No way! :D I grew up in the hudson valley area all my life. Just moved to philli recently.
 
Being in the emergency services for 10 years and emergency management (fire officer) for 3 years before calling it quits do not rely on these alerts on your phone. Buy a NOAA weather radio if you want to get alerts and warnings before severe weather or a life threatening situation strikes. Also with many 911 centers making use of reverse 911 were 911 calls you in case of severe weather or life threatening situation (hazmat, nuclear emergency, etc) call your local 911 center and ask about reverse 911 if they have it implemented you can register your cell phone to be called, most dispatch centers have your landline phone already in the system. If you do not own a landline phone call and ask about reverse 911. Wireless emergency alerts rely on cell towers...if a violent long tracked tornado destroys cell towers don't rely on getting the warning.

Yep. Neither my wife nor I got the alerts. Not a big deal to me, just thought it was weird.
 
I've received two of them in the past month...but none at all up until then.

One was an amber alert, and the other was for flash flooding. The flood warning woke me up at 3am :mad:...and there was NO FLOODING BTW.

Lol they just say it as a warning so we'd be more careful.
