Help wireless hotspot

Does the Optimus V have the built in wireless hotspot?? If so, how much does virgin charge to activate it?

VM doesn't support wireless hotspot. In fact they have rules against it. The phone can be changed to support a hotspot but should be used only temporarily. Look around and you will find the info..
 
it is capable of doing it, the option has been removed from the menus and needs to be activated by other means (quick settings app)

virgin charges nothing to activate it but it is also against the terms of service
 
I believe there's an app called "Hotspot Widget" that also works, and I just noticed a WiFi Hotspot widget in the Widgetsoid2 list that also looks like it will work. Where does it say this is not allowed? I bought a phone and a Widget from the Market makes it work... how can that be "wrong"? Personally I don't use it, I have a much faster connection at home and at work.

Depends if you have one of the new upgraded v's. They blocked it on new ones. If you have an older one you can use quick settings. Don't abuse it. ;)
 
Extended Controls,cost a little but it has WiFi Hotspot and Tethering and also has mass storage toggle.Sometimes this dosen't work in settings when your trying to transfer files from your SD card to you computer(without taking out your SD card),but will with this toggle,you just have to press it twice.It has a slew of useful toggles that you can create and customize. Mine only show the icon(no big ugly black boarder,no silly on off indicator light).When there are on,the icon is bright. When there off the icon is faint(dim). But that's just how I set them up.

Wow... so much misinformation in this thread.

Purchase the Virgin Mobile Mifi (this is hotspot equipment) and get one of their plans for it. You can hook up to 5 wifi capable devices to it (ie; laptop, cell phone, ipod etcetera).

actually i see no misinformation here

just people stating the following facts

1. the optimus v is capable of being a wifi hotspot
2. it requires an app from the market because the option is missing from the menus
4. it is against terms of service of the beyond talk plan
5. it is believed to be a major factor in Virgin's decision to start throttling at 2.5GB
 
I would say if you do decide to violate the terms of service.

Don't do anything you can't do on your V.
Flash etc etc.

The big risk is VM can yank you anytime they decide to make examples out of those who
violate their terms....

You can't without breaking the terms of service, and without causing some damage to the phone over time (excessive heat is not good for the phones processor, memory, or battery. It's a well documented fact that the OpV gets hotter than hell while using the hotspot feature.)

Having said that, the op has a choice. He can either break VM's ToS, buy the Mifi, or not use hotspot at all. Either way, I'm sure he doesn't want to damage his phone... so I gave him another option he can try. Don't like it? Put me on ignore.

It get hotter charging it than it does using the hotspot. I'm overclocked also and my phone is still kicking.
 
Does anyone actually read the fine print in "terms of service"? I don't believe tethering should be abused, but if you can download a free Market app and click on it, which allows a tablet connect to it, how am I supposed to know I'm breaking the "terms of service" (other than having read it here)? I've never tethered a phone and barely know what it is, but if I check my email on a tablet while on the road with my Optimus-V... I can't image that is an issue.

I don't actually own a tablet, but plan on buying the Asus Transformer (unless a decent 7" tablet comes out soon). I can see how temporary tethering would be real handy. I would only watch movies when on Wifi, no need to tether.
 
Well, I *always* read fine print. That is where you learn important stuff, and if you don't it can come back and bite you on the butt...
 
But I do agree that tethering to check email on a tablet probably wouldn't cause any problems as far as causing you to appear on the radar of abusers.

It is the folks that come on and brag about dumping their home Internet and hooking up laptops and gaming consoles that need their fannies kicked, although I haven't noticed much of that lately.

I have a Mifi for traveling, and the last time we needed it I left the laptop at home and we just used an iPad and a netbook and used very little of what was purchased. When we took the laptop, it sucked down an incredible amount, just from two people checking stocks and CNN. It is amazing the difference between mobile devices and laptops.
 
If you must use the "V" to run your PC(some of use can't afford two separate Internet bills) then download PdaNet net onto your PC. It has a option to hide said tethering activity. I can't see if your using it for that purpose, that you could possible violate any moral or ethical codes. If you are paying for the service and paid for the phone,and are using it solely for the above mentioned purpose,then Virgin Mobile isn't really loosing,there gaining(people who are paying for there service,who would go somewhere else,if it wasn't for the ability to do that which is all ready described). If someone is intent on using it for any other activity,then the burden of guilt is solely on them
 
If you are using your phone to run a pc, it isn't going to matter if you hide the tethering--they are going to throttle you down after 2.5 g and a pc will hit that pretty quickly.


And, if going against something specifically forbidden in a user agreement isn't going against moral or ethical codes, I am curious to know how you define these terms...

MY bad. I just got done reading the terms of service manual and under "SPECIFIC TERMS AND RESTRICTIONS REGARDING DATA SERVICES" You may not use the data service(skip down):Item #4 for tethering your device to a personal computer or other device. I now feel obligated to make a full retraction of any and all advice given to the contrary.
