Wireless Portable Storage

4 hrs use on battery, longer on standby, obviously, AND you can use it plugged in.
great for the train, office or when away from my local network.

If you only use it to store the files and copy the movie you want to watch to the nexus only when you need it (deleting it after you watch it), you can then turn it off again, so 4hrs should be plenty... I hope :0)

Am I missing something here, can't you do the same with DropBox, and also use Myphoneexplorer to transfer other files from you PC to your device via WiFi without any connections and use your files that way. What makes this any different ?? I don't believe this expand your phone storage?

Two words: TPAC Flight. Actually, a lot of non-TPAC flights too, even those with wi-fi equipped planes. (In flight wi-fi is notoriously slooooo.....w.) Then you get out into BFE anywhere that you don't have any sort of network signal while traveling by car.

Looks like a great idea. I'll be interested in hearing how it works out.

to an extent, but I dont have 64GB of dropbox storage and only have 1GB of data included in my phone contract, so I only use my phone as a wifi hotspot when I really need to. This is for when I am away from WiFi.

I use various cloud services like dropbox, skydrive, minus and mediafire, but when I have no internet access they become useless.

What's the advantage over buying a 64gb thumb drive and a USB OTG cable?

I mean, I get that it's a little cleaner because there's no additional cable, but you're going to be impacting both the tablet's battery life, and wearing down the battery on the drive as well.

I believe the OTG cable will only work for storage if rooted, and even when rooted it is tricky from what I read.

My method is also sufficient, their case is if they don't have WiFi or proper internet hotspot or availability

3 people can connect to it at the same time, so my girlfriend and I can both watch 2 different movies at the same time for example, plus like you said its cleaner, you can just turn it on and have it in your bag or pocket without cables etc.

I have an OTG cable as well, its just an additional option.

plus I am not rooted, so cannot write to a thumb drive via OTG, only read.

You only have to be rooted to write to the storage, reading does not require root - and it couldn't be easier.

Ah, that's a great feature for traveling if you both have tablets or smartphones.

Yep, that is why I mentioned for rooted users only, to be able to transfer. I should have mentioned that ;)

This device is perfect for someone such as myself, who unfortunately has a ridiculously slow Internet connection, rated at 1 Mbps download and .45 Mbps upload. (high-speed my a$$!). I live on a very remote island off the northeast coast of Newfoundland where, sadly, this is the only "high-speed" Internet provider.

To be forced to rely on something like Dropbox, Skydrive, etc would be extremely painful... and pointless. Wi-Drive to the rescue!!!!!

I recently bought the 16 gig version, and after playing around with it for a little while, I realized that, from a tablet's perspective, it is basically a read-only local video server. It does pictures OK, but I would rather store them locally and use quickpic. Music is basically folder-based and cannot be organized into any kind of playlist, which is a negative for me.
Video playback, however is where the device shines the best. Playback is flawless and you can instantaneously seek from one point to another with no lag or buffer or anything, just as if the video was stored locally on the internal storage. If you're a heavy movie watcher, you can take a bunch of movies (or whatever other "videos" of choice... ;D) with you anytime, anywhere, without compromising your device storage. I admit I haven't actually used it heavily enough yet to gauge its typical battery life though. But thus far its pretty nice.

Thanks for that, good to know.

You can write to it from android as well though, Im sure I have seen youtube videos of people doing so.

The device has an ip address, so you can access it from any web browser an I think most file browsers like astro or file expert should be able to see it?

Even if not thats not why Im getting it, playback is my main reason, so thats cool.

I have a 32G one and it is pretty slick. You connect to it via wifi and you wouldn't then be able to access the internet via your router or whatever except that it has a cool pass-thru feature that allows the WiDrive to log into your router while the tablet is logged into the WiDrive. It is fast enough to allow 3 different devices to stream 3 different videos at the same time. The battery life is definitely its Achilles heel plus it is expensive for the amount of storage you get.

If you don't need it to be used by up to 3 devices at once then you are probably better off using an OTG cable with the Nexus Media Importer app (no root needed) with a USB thumb drive.
