Root Wireless Tether and battery life

Hi all, I followed the great "1-click update" instructions a few weeks ago to root my Eris, but stopped short of installing a custom ROM. I was only interested in getting Wireless Tether to work. It does work, and it's a thing of beauty.

Only problem is that it drains the battery very quickly (< 1 hr) and causes the phone to get hot. Also, after running Wireless Tether once, the battery continues to drain more quickly than usual even after turning off Wifi and killing Wireless Tether with a Task Manager. I now reboot my phone every time I'm done using Wireless Tether.

Is this to be expected, or would installing a custom ROM alleviate either of those symptoms?

I don't know if a rom would make a difference but wireless tether will drain your battery and get hot for sure. It does mine.

Getting hot drains the battery as well, which is probably why it seems to drain faster after you stop tethering. A custom ROM may help, as you can underclock when the phone stops using CPU - using less battery power - and using an app like SetCPU to govern overclocking, you can set a battery temp threshold to set the clock speed down to help reduce battery drain as well.

Before installing a custom ROM I would do a Nandroid backup, so you can go back to what you have now, but you can install the xtrSENSE ROM right over stock without wiping data first, so all of your data apps will remain installed. As long as you have a Nandroid backup you can always go back if you do not like xtrSENSE.

By the way, I don't usually promote my (free) BattMonX app over here on the Eris forums since the LED controls supported by HTC devices are not nearly as good as the Moto ones, but my app has a high battery temperature monitoring mode, which you could use with the status bar icon monitoring.

It won't change or lower your clock rate, but it will display a special icon on the status bar and/or optionally vibrate or make the default system sound if the temp gets above the threshold you specify.
