Root Wireless tether/mobile hotspot

Ok, I feel like I have done enough reading on knowing how to preform the root on my phone, but I am just curious as to how I get different features like wireless tether, or any tether for that matter, without having to download easytether or PDAnet. Is hot spot even available on our phones?

Do custom kernels have these features built in? If so, what is a good kernel to use with OMJ's post on rooting the droid without RSDlite?

I really just want my phone to act like it acts and look like it looks now, just have additional features and maybe overclock it a bit. I don't want a headache

Hot spot is available on our phones and it is easier if rooted. Just search for Wireless Tether for Root Users by Muller, Lemons, Buxton in the market once you're rooted. Easy one touch wireless tethering. Also pretty much all custom kernels have this feature built in. I say it like that because it wasn't always like that but it is now. As for which kernel to use, it's pretty much what works best for your phone. If you take a look at the kernel thread they are all top notch. For example, my phone doesn't like running above 1100 on low voltage but it can at standard voltage.

Thanks for the post, I don't understand anything about the voltage, what does that mean?

I am looking at the Ultimate Droid 8.0 ROM, and it looks like everyone likes that one, if I leave the stock kernel on, I will NOT get wireless tethering?

When downloading any custom roms like UD 8.0 (or Sapphire, Cyanogen, Bugless Beast, etc.....) they all come with a custom kernel and you will be able to use wireless tethering.

Ok, so why are people saying they are using their stock kernels? Or do they just mean the kernel that came with UD 8.0? Not the one that came on the phone from Motorola

Correct. If they are running UD 8 and saying stock kernel they are referring to the kernel that comes "stock" with that rom. Now if you were to just root your phone without flashing a custom rom, you would have to flash a custom kernel to get wireless tether working.

Awesome, just one more question, I am using mybackup pro, and want to use Titanium backup, too but it says it's only for root users. How do I backup using ti backup before I root the phone?

Is there any way to do it without root? I don't have the Droid, but a friend who does is very interested in having a hotspot and is looking at the Droid 2 just to get it. I told her I know it is possible with a few modifications to her existing phone, but I only know how it works on the Eris.

I believe it comes with the Droid 2 by default but you have to pay verizon for it. A free alternative is PDA net but that is only wired tethering.
