Root wireless tether question

Hey guys didn't know exactly where to post this, but I purchased a wifi USB adapter, wireless n. When I try to use this to find my wireless tethers ssid it wont find any kind of connection. I'm on a rooted thunderbolt with the latest wireless tether

Make sure you are not hiding the ssid, make sure encryption is compatible. All I can think of at the moment

You'll probably have to broadcast the ssid as Jrocker mentioned. Also, I believe the T-bolt can only handle 2.4gHz networks.
