With Android on the rise, do you think that Apple's iOS is dying?

So why were they updated to ios4? Pretty much kills the whole advantage of Apple's updates.

And yet people gripe because their phones that were designed to run 1.6 don't get updated to FroYo. This is why.

Anyway, iOS isn't going anywhere for two reasons. First of all, it's got the power of the Apple hype machine behind it and second of all, it's a very, very good OS. It comes down to preference. iOS is like the hot girlfriend. She only wants to do certain things and she only wants to do them her way. She can be difficult to deal with because she never wants to do anything your way. She may be a little psycho, but you don't want to break up with her because she's so freaking hot.

Sad but true..

No, actually it's not true. It's a made-up-on-the-spot mischaracterization and inaccurate generalization of Apple users as a whole. There is absolutely zero evidence to substantiate his claim that the "overwhelming majority of apple users are computer illiterate", just like there would be absolutely zero evidence to substantiate a claim if someone were to suggest that the "overwhelming majority of Droid users were convicted felons". It's utter nonsense. And remember, that is the same person who stated in another thread that If Apple users were erased from the face of the earth absolutely nothing of value would be lost. Rhetoric that devalues human beings on that level we would expect to see at a hate rally, not in a discussion about cell phones users.

My point is that the false claim that "the majority Apple users are computer illiterate" results directly from what can only be describe as, sheer hatred towards Apple users (as link I provided illustrates..). And thus in an effort to justify/prop up that narrative, some people will resort to making up or saying literally anything regardless of how ridiculous it might be. It's simply best not to subscribe to broad generalizations about groups of people, IMO.

:)

Not sure..though I agree with you. The 3G is not made to run ios4, the phone's overall performance takes a major hit. The 3GS however, doesn't have that problem, because the hardware is significantly faster than the 3G.

Perhaps Apple should "cap" the updates on iOS for the older model phones, because those who own the 3G will update to ios4 and beyond, erroneously thinking it will be for the better--when in reality the phone's performance suffers greatly.

You ever think the sweeping generalization of mac/apple users exists for a reason? Like all the people that say osx is more secure... they are computer illiterate.

People who think macs have better hardware,.(despite the opposite being true) are computer illiterate.

People who think photoshop runs better on a mac, are computer illiterate.

People who think iTunes is the only way to put media on a pmp, are computer illiterate.

People who believe any of steve jobs bullshit, are computer illiterate.

Look, I just described 99% of the Apple user base.
IPhone users must be losing their confidence because they are invading this forum at an ever alarming rate hmmm....

All computers are vulnerable when it comes to security on some level. The question isn't who is more secure, but who is safer. We both may have the exact same locks on our doors, but you live in Compton and I live in Beverly Hills. Who do you think is safer.

The fact of the matter is I've used OS X for 8 years now, have torrented, surfed and downloaded as much as the next guy, never run antivirus software and have yet to experience virus, malware, spyware, or an other kind of ware. With the same computing practices on a PC I'd have been infected many times over.

People who think macs have better hardware,.(despite the opposite being true) are computer illiterate.

True illiteracy comes in the form of comparing hardware merely on specs alone.

Look, IOWA, we get it. You think you're awesome behind a keyboard, and we are all just losers compared to your computing and grammar prowess. Grow up.

Now, back to the real discussion. There is no way iOS dies out anytime soon. Its too good of an OS. Android is a great OS too. It has some advantages, largely being on multiple carriers and having multiple models. The downside of that is the difficulty that presents to developers and the difficulty that comes with getting updates out to consumers.

And if you don't understand that Apple doesn't care all that much about gross market share then you obviously haven't been paying attention lately. There's a reason Apple is now the largest tech company in the world. They go after revenue share. Its easy to "sell" 100,000 Android devices in a day when you give half of them away in buy one get one free promotions. It's also a lot easier to move a lot of units when your ASP is around half of what Apple's is. But you won't make a whole lot of money doing that. Android devices are quickly becoming like PCs in that they are commodities with very slim margins and not a whole lot of differentiation.

Personally I care less about Androids fancy notifications and more about the Marketplace. Android will be as successful as the apps it has. And right now, Apple has a much better experience in finding, managing and downloading apps, and the apps they have are much higher in quality. This is what having a curated store gives you. Security and quality.

The downside is that iPhone users can't customize their phones unless they jailbreak them (the majority of the apps that Android has but Apple doesn't are these types of apps). That is something that will probably never change. I love being able to personalize my DX. I just wish it didn't take so damn long to make it look acceptable in my eyes.

The most disliked and ignorant member of androidforums strikes again ;)

You described some beliefs that some Apple users hold. Certainly not "the overwhelming majority" and definitely not "99% of the Apple user base"--unless you have a source to substantiate that claim? Of course I present this challenge because I know (and you know) that you do not have anything to substantiate the broad and ignorant generalization that you present.

Which is precisely my point. Your generalizations and exaggerated claim holds the same amount of water as would a claim made by someone suggesting that: "the overwhelming majority of droid users are convicted felons" or "99% of the droid base are convicted felons", it's simply nonsense. :)

Not a chance. More realistically, it's possible that those who consistently regurgitate the cartoonishly inaccurate generalizations of Apple users are actually the ones losing any confidence. After all, why else would anyone so vehemently defend or make up nonsense (and lies) about Apple users?

For instance: If someone were to falsely suggest that "the overwhelming of droid users are convicted felons", that would be a clear indication that that individual is actually the one who is losing confidence, pathetically desperate, and possibly losing grasp on reality--not the Droid users who his cartoonishly inaccurate generalization is aimed at. Unless you want to argue otherwise? :p

Actually no, 100% of apple users I have encountered have all said "osx is more secure" or something along those lines despite the contrary evidence. And how many mac users have I encountered? Well being I deal with a lot of "designers" for a living, its well into the 100s. That right there is proof enough. Don't believe me? Head to a mac osx forum and ask "which os is the most secure between osx and win7"

Despite all evidence pointing that win7 is the most secure and stable os in history(to date) I am willing to bet 99% of those people(or at least 90%, depending on how many people answer) will say osx is more secure, thus backing my claim.

...Head to a mac osx forum and ask "which os is the most secure between osx and win7"...
That's a good idea, somebody should do that... of course it'd be a kick in the nuts of your Apple users are computer illiterate argument if the first couple of replies refused to comply to your generalizations, right?

It would be if that were at all likely to happen. I've met some Mac users that are pretty top notch when it comes to technology, but there's gotta be some bad apples in every bunch. (Just kidding, I couldn't resist.)

But that would lead to OS fragmentation.

I don't have a problem with 'dumb' computer illiterates.
Look, the whole point of smartphones is to make things easier. They should be for everyone. I am against this android/linux elitist attitude that having Android is a validation of your techie geekness and I'm against this iPhone elitist attitude that owning an iPhone proves that you are culturally sophisticated with class that the 'other' people just won't understand.
I'm glad Android is now #1 because it means that it appeals to all kinds of people and not just geeks and open source fans.
And while android isn't perfect, people will adapt to it just as they've adapted to the internet. Nobody will go back to AOL even though it was so easy to use, no wonder why it was #1

Maybe that's because it got deleted >.<
Nope, it was broken before you edited it to be deleted.

Did you really go back and request your own thread deleted because nobody who replied, not one, fitted the stereotype you were hoping to expose?!

You asked a question hoping to get response you could then use to mock a group of people you claimed were computer illiterate, but instead they came back with reasonable answers, and showed they were not any of the things you falsely accused them of; so you went on and claimed they weren't welcoming enough!

And just for the record not 1 person went with OS X; 0%, far from the 90%+ that you bet would.

Lol... I've heard some good ones but geez.... this one takes the cake for you mpw.

What do you mean IOWA, was that not your thread?

Even if it wasn't, and I find that incredibly hard to believe, the facts still stand that not a single respondent to the question you asked gave the answer you bet over 90% would; and some of those respondent's showed themselves to be quite literate despite your claims otherwise.

Computer illiterates usually don't spend their time in computer specific web foums

Good point. So where can we find a control of some sort? I thought of the apple store, but that would be too biased towards my intended results IMO.

So where do we find that happy medium while providing sustainable proof? Can it be done?

What thread? Link me to the one your talking about.

I am against this android/linux elitist attitude that having Android is a validation of your techie geekness

This attitude I have seen and experienced first hand. I've personally lost count the number of times a random stranger will stumble up to me (if I have to take out my iphone 4 to make a call or something) and they proceed to spew nonsense about their [insert droid phone here] and then parrot the talking points used at a mall verizon booth.

and I'm against this iPhone elitist attitude that owning an iPhone proves that you are culturally sophisticated with class that the 'other' people just won't understand.

This kind of attitude on the other hand..I have never seen...EVER. And I know a lot of iphone owners. Out of all of my friends, co workers, and family members who own an iphone, absolutely ~none~ of them have that attitude. They see the iphone as just a cellphone and not an extension or symbol of their "sophistication" or anything of the sort. I don't even know where that stereotype comes from, I've seen people complain about that attitude, but I've never seen it firsthand. Ever. Even counting all the times i've been in an Apple store, ATT retail store (that sells Iphones), Bestbuy, or anything of the sort.

But like I mentioned above, I have seen the "I'm a droid owner and therefore I'm a tech God (and I'll never realize how big of an idiot I am)" attitude, many many times.

You only see what you want to see. I see both all the time. iPhone is the phone of choice for the Hollywood celebrity set. There's a reason for that. It wouldn't be so popular if you took the same specs and OS and put it in the body of a Droid.
