If you dont mind losing sense you can always download ADW or Launcher Pro. Both of them allow you to hide labels.
You don't have to root to do this on sense. Download folder organizer lite from the market. Once you have it downloaded you can add a folder organizer light item widget. That will bring up a list of apps at the top of the list uncheck the show label box then pi k your app. You can also use this program to change your icons.

I use Desktop Visualizer. You can use any icon, remove labels, and you aren't limited to just one size one the desktop.

Bloated, glossy, plastic, toylike, gradients are all wrong imo.
