Within becomes Epic Touch 4G

Remember how when the first version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 came out - it was FAT in width (model was 10.1V):

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-10.1V-arriving-in-Europe-with-Vodafone-1.jpg

...and THEN the iPad 2 was released in all its super-thin glory. So Samsung back-tracked and discontinued the 10.1V for the much thinner/lighter 10.1 to compete with the iPad2.

I have a feeling this is a cat/mouse game where in the midst of all this litigation and patent crap, Samsung is waiting for iPhone 5 to be announced first with out back-tracking a released SGS2 and redesigning it to compete with iPhone 5. If it releases AFTER iPhone 5 there is less chance Samsung can be accused of "copying" simply because Apple released theirs first and Samsung didn't release an "inferior" version of the SGS2 prior to the iPhone 5 release.

Slight difference with the tablet though, Samung never released the fat version, the Galaxy S 2 has been out for a few months already over seas.

Also I really don't think the phone needs to be any thinner, from what I hear it is already quite thin.

I just want it released. I have had the EVO 3D already, didn't care for it. Now I have the Photon, it is alright, but it is hard for me to really like it that much when I am waiting on this phone.

And you verified those cad dimensions with your micrometer and the lab test unit right?

It seems to me that your argument has reached a point of no return. It defies common sense to think that Samsung is sitting around waiting for Apple to release the iPhone 5 so that Samsung can make some last minute changes to the phone to be competitive. You have no basis for this suggestion other than your opinion that Samsung changed its tablet to compete with the iPad2.

So, in essence, you are saying that Samsung is waiting to release a phone because you think that the Samsung Tablet was changed to compete with the iPad. That's a real reach.

It has already been demonstrated in Europe that the "old" Galaxy S II has outsold the current iPhone. I don't think that Samsung needs to see a new iPhone in order to release a competitive product. If Samsung is that dependent upon waiting for what Apple puts out, it's going to take a lot longer than a few weeks to magically come up with a new phone.

And finally, a release date for the Verizon Galaxy version has been slated for 9/8. http://phandroid.com/2011/08/03/lea...ce-names-for-androids-upcoming-heavy-hitters/ I don't think you are arguing that Samsung plans to release a new version for Verizon if Apple should come out with a nifty iPhone 5, are you?

Lol. I didn't think the name was dirty until now.
But the name sounds pretty cool.
But like said above, just release the damn phone already. lol

EDIT: Question: If the Within was already approved by the FCC, doesn't that mean that the name has to be the Within?
(I'm not good with all this kind of stuff. :p)
True. I just wish they stayed with the name, "Within" because I thought it had a unique sound to it. Anything with "Touch" in it has already been used, i.e., "My Touch", "TouchPad"' "TouchWiz", etc.

I still think it'll be the best handset out until the next Nexus phone comes out. No other dual core phone to me has been Omgosh. The Photon is the Atrix for Sprint. The Bionic will be the same. Just slightly altered for differ. They all have the same blur. A few new and unique features to benefit the carrier. Its like the original Galaxy. Same phone a few unique features. Evo 3d, cool but not a big jump. Same with Sensation just no 3D. Sgs 2 is the best dual core phone in my opinion in design and performance. That out dated crap is old news. In a couple months when another phone comes out what will it really have that makes it better? A rival dual core and same Res screen. Same version of android. I know we all want the latest and basest right now but something later wont be that different.
It takes a year truely to have a successor or any phone to top others.

I'm just saying this phone will still be sweet once it comes out.

I totally agree. GS2 is the phone of the year. The EVO 3D wasn't worth upgrading. I'm going to play this one out and see what the next Nexus is all about. For me its the Nexus Prime, the next EVO, or the GS3. One of the three.

I keep meaning to answer your question and then I forget.

Both the name "Within" and the name "Epic Touch" are speculation. There has been no official word on the actual name. Once the phone is announced, the name will finally be known.

On all the FCC applications, the manufacturer uses the model number. No name is attached to the phone on the application to the FCC.

Fortunately, the name will not be put on the phone in any case.

United States Patent and Trademark Office

"GALAXY WITHIN" had the name/registration published on August 2. Read the "Notice of Publication" document

Anyways, I don't want to keep producing facts based on my experience as an engineer. I don't like being argumentative. I just want the phone to be released so don't take me the wrong way. I think it's the carriers that change the name so it's really up to them to keep Samsung's model names or not. I'm just saying that "WITHIN" is the Samsung model name. Same with "FUNCTION" and "ATTAIN". Those patents were filed same day by Samsung

I'm duly impressed you are an engineer. However, you are providing a citation from the U.S. Patent Office. As you will note, I was speaking of the FCC certification.

What Sprint will call THIS PHONE is still speculation. Sprint and/or Samsung may have trademarked the name "Touchy", but it doesn't mean that they are going to name THIS PHONE the Touchy.

As of today, what they name THIS PHONE is still speculation.

You appear to be argumentative for no particular reason. Are you sure you actually aren't a lawyer?

Actually I'm being argumentative because I'm frustrated that this phone hasn't been released yet, I'm really impatient, and I turn into a total A-hole because I really want this phone...so for that I apologize. These days, I wish I were a patent lawyer with all the ridiculous law suits going on between companies. Anyways - I have no probs with you unplugged. I'm backing off and going back to waiting for some more leaks or news.

I feel your pain. I think I'm losing my sense of humor.

I shouldn't get irritated at anyone other than Samsung. Okay, maybe Sprint, too.

Yeah and plus the fact that it's taking FOREVER for them to update my Epic to Gingerbread while ALL these other phones it seems like are getting the update earlier and were released later than the Epic. FRUSTRATING!

Right. I'm going to stick to the Nexus line. I'm just ready for Ice Cream. Knowing I'll get that on my Nexus S 4G makes me want to get the Within or whatever they name it. I'm sure that'll get a port thanks to XDA.

I suppose Sprint will have to formally announce it in the next week or so. (Don't they usually announce major phones about three weeks ahead of the release?)

I hope so. Any official Sprint teaser would be nice even if its the sign up page. It would be nice too if all those rumors about upgraded specs would be true...and be available for USA release since we waited this long lol. Any word or confirmation if we'll have NFC?

Do you think this phone will blow away the photon and the evo 3d? Will this be the it phone everyone will get? or is it overhyped? It looks like a powerhouse to me, but those super amoled screens tend to show oversaturation with colors, but are very bright and look sharp.

Unfortunately, the NFC antennae was not listed in the FCC certification. (Although it was in the AT&T one.) I did read somewhere that the NFC chip was still there, but not activated. That sounds a bit nonsensical to me.

I haven't seen a super amoled plus screen in person so that's a good question I'm sure most of us are wondering about too. But I can say this...the fact that its sold millions around the world in less than 4 months with all the other android options says something don't you think? :D

In my opinion the GS2 is the phone to beat. It's received rave reviews everywhere. I'm not upgrading until either the holiday season or next year. But if I where to get a phone right now, this would be it.

Just head on over to ATT and try out the Infuse. The display is way better than the Photon. I like my Photon but trying it out next to the Infuse was embarrassing. Color temp is all wrong on the Photon and it is little more grainy.

I agree about the size, I held an infuse 4g in the store and it felt the tiniest bit too wide to truly sit comfortably in my hand, and I don't have baby hands like some guys do. I had no 4.3" samsungs to compare it to, but the 4.3" htc models felt just right to hold. I assume the overseas samsung gs2 is the same way.

Shame they could not leave well enough alone. Still getting it even in infuse dimensions, but I do wish it was exactly the same.
