I finally found an image for the WM8650 7" Android tablet (non 3G) that makes the tablet rock! Installation is super easy but does wipe the device. Backup any data you want to keep. You will also need an SD card you can format. The difference in loading this ROM is night and day. No more strange Chinese apps, no more lockups or unexplained reboots and access to the real Android Market directly on the PC. Any apps I paid for on my Android Phone were available for download to the tablet now too!


Download Uberoid ROM.


Download SD Formatter and install it on a Windows PC.


Connect the SD card to your computer and use the SD formatter to create an empty FAT32 volume.

Unzip the Uberoid download to an empty folder on your PC first, then copy the files onto the SD card. (for some reason extraction directly to the SD card failed on me)

The wmt_scriptcmd file and FirmwareInstall folder should be on the root of the card.

With the android tablet turned off, insert the SD card, and turn it back on.

During startup the android tablet will read the SD card and install the firmware. It took about 4 minutes for the process to complete before the device rebooted into the new OS. Watch the screen because the SD card must be ejected when the firmware installation completes or the upgrade will run again after the device restarts.

After installation I went into the applications list and found an app for fixing the market. I was then able to go into the regular Android Market after setting up my WiFi connection. I found it necessary to search for GMail in the market to update the version contained in the ROM image. After doing that I was able to access GMail on the tablet.

Everything else I did was related to setting up the environment the way I like such as using ADW Launcher as my default launcher. Moving icons around etc.

* Note that there is a large clock widget on the home screen that will prevent you from putting icons on the desktop, I removed that.

Overall this improved the device 1000%. I was really disappointed in the tablet and now I am extremely happy with it.

Clarification: Others have been reporting that they have tried the information I have posted, some with success and others without success. Make sure your loading the right ROM for your device. The Tech Know web site has many ROMs to try. My device has a blue LED, WiFi Only and is 7 inches. If your device does not fit that description, you can still follow my upgrade instructions but you need a different ROM.

Got an 8" wm8650 (green led) off ebay. Was "okay" but definitely could be better. Now bear in mind this is NOWHERE near my first time flashing or rooting...rooted my HTC dream, sony x10, sony arc and galaxy 10.1 tablet with zero trouble. But this thing? That's a whole other story.

Got this for my daughter and many of the apps she loves simply wouldn't install or run on this. So after a LOT of digging around for info on flashing a new ROM this thread seemed like the perfect solution. I was wrong.

I have NO idea what happened here but after following these steps I have nothing but a white screen with speckles and lines. NOTHING loads. NO images. NO change. Tried multiple sd cards. Multiple methods of formatting the sd cards. Tried multiple ROMs linked here. Only thing I can add here is that NONE of the links for TechKnow opened for me. Sure I can get to the site but all I get is a message that the forums is being closed down and the register link seems dead.

So now what? Has ANYONE come up with a GOOD, RELIABLE, and WORKING ROM and flash tool for this tablet? Already contacted the seller and he SAYS he will honour the warranty but nothing can be done until after feb 01 (chinese new year). I'm not too upset at possibly being out $80 but my daughter is beside herself that her new tablet is already dead after less than one day of use.

Please...can ANYONE help me out here????????????

I am desperate to get this running for her a.s.a.p. Thanks all.

aaliy06, Well that is strange as mine had no issues, but you can download Applanet, or AppBrain App market and they can get you a great amount of stuff.

Would you know why I can't get skype to work on the tablet? it keeps saying that skype has stopped working. And again thanks for your help.

No, I havent installed Skype on this tablet with the new ROM but I did have it installed on the Chinese ROM and it worked well on it, but I havent tried it yet on this ROM.
 
Thanks phantomseed, If you try skype on yours would you let me know if it works on yours, being able to use skype on the tablet was one main reason why I got this tablet, so hopefully some how it will work.

thanks so much for this help. Neither of these roms worked for me but I did get much further than before. At least this time when I put in the sd card and booted it up I did get to the loading screen showing me what files\folders were being loaded. When I got the message to remove the sd card I did just that and it came back on with a solid white screen again. Let it sit for quite a few minutes but nothing changed. Did this with both roms. Going to have to choose from 2 options now I guess. try and find an older rom that will work or using the original rom. I managed to get hold of the seller and explained this and they sent me a link to the original rom and flashtool. Time will tell I guess.

Update: After many hours and MANY roms I FINALLY have it updated and running great. Since I had no idea which model I had I just went through each 8" version until I got one that booted. A few booted but had no touch panel functionality. Others had no button response but most simply did nothing other than the white screen. But to be safe I updated it twice and rechecked and everything is going great.

wondering if you could offer some help. i have the same problems as discussed. tried loads of roms and the nearest to working is the blue light version but with no wifi, just turns off cant find server. it is green light version but that rom just freezes. reistalled orig froyo but it has loads of issues on net with flash evaluation copy etc. please help kids xmas present not happy.
 
What is your model specs and colors red/blue or red/green ,7" or 8'" ?

hi thanks for reply. its a 6.98 inch 800*480screen. believe its via wm 8560 80 mhz 256mb ddr ram.(its red lol)it is green light version,(green rom stalls) was trying roms and the blue light version seems the only one to work but cant get on net wifi wont work. will re install then work through the how to file and let you know. yes tried rt3070 aswell

just looked at your file. tried option 8 and 11 which best fit this netbook. on option 11 i get as far as a hexagon type graphic boot screen (active) but no further. with option 8 i get everything working. wifi and all. only problem i can see is i still get stupid pop up saying flash is a evaluation copy. how do i update or replace adobe flash so that the kids can play games with out the pop up constant. thanks so far

"Flash WILL NOT run well on the WM8650. Adobe has STOPPED development on Flash for Mobile Devices and they will use HTML5 in lieu of Flash. What that means is that the only version of Flash for WM8650 is the evaluation copy, which is/was a test, it will not get better."

Basically I went through every 8" tablet listed in the older honeycomb link but none worked for me. Using the honeycomb beta I did the same and it was # 35 (CEM8650801 "8) that worked for me. Since I have no idea what the actual model # of my tab I just went one after the other until I found something that worked. Just about everything is good now. A few small quirks I am working through.

First the gallery doesn't work right. It starts up but sees no image files on the internal storage even though they ARE there. Might just be an SD card thing but don't have a spare to dedicate to it right now. Am trying out the gallery.apk I ripped out of my sony x10 and arc. Found a few other versions that I will try out until I find one that works the way I want it to.

Secondly the camera app doesn't work correctly. It does take pics but never shows the pic after it has been snapped. Doesn't record video only stills. No settings to get into either. Again...checking into other cam apps to solve this.

Thirdly the calender app starts but any time we try and create any events we get an error that there are no calenders on the tablet. Think I can get through this though if I can find the path to the calender file and substitute it with one that I know works.

And lastly it seems the wifi only works when connected to an N router. If it's on B then the wifi connects but we get no internet connection. Change to an N router and the internet is fully working.

All in all I am please with it. After reflashing the screen is crisper and clearer. A little brighter too. The tab DEFINITELY runs faster and the touch screen is WAY more sensitive than ever before...and more accurate too. A little more digging and I will have this thing setup just the way I want it. :)
 
I bought 2 MID generic devices from Frys Electronics in December.

After trying many roms I learned that it is best to just try many things as there are so many of these with different specs.

I did the Universal_Uberoid_WM8650_v10.1 finally after understanding that they have something like 26 to 30 choices for models inside a program of this file that will create a zip for me. Initially I just turned this into a zip and loaded it... yes I did not understand what I was doing... I went through every option that was a 7 inch model. Finally on 20 or something like that it finally took the rom and loaded operational. I then gave them to family as Christmas gifts.

If you don't understand what I mean by 26 options, you are probably like me in not initially understanding how to load this program.

Start by opening Changer in the downloaded folder for Universal Uberoid.

Next select what you think is your model.... which may be harder than you think...

if you don't know- create a list on scratch paper of all the models that you see in Changer with anything resembling your specs... (as I did not have anything except WM8650, and later learned that it does not matter what color light you have with some models). I listed # - Description by row (to go to page 2 type "n" then "enter").

When you finish your list all possibilities, start at the top and cross off every one that doesn't work select the number then hit enter. It will make you a zip file. Make sure you FORMAT the SD card every time with SDFormater. Put the ZIP on the card and load it to your device- power on.
some will boot up and the touch screen doesn't work- cross it off and move on- BE PATIENT boot times may take over 5 minutes. I hit gold at 20 which was ePAD M009D 7" ...

Enjoy a nice cheap tablet that is rooted. Although I was bummed as these simply do not have power to do much. WIFI is hard to connect sometimes. BUT I did not play enough and just gave them away. What I did like about this device was that it didn't ever Brick on me. I thought it was a few times but never actually did.
 
Hi! Hope someone can help this dummy. I was trying to change the language setting (trying to get rid of the Chinese characters), and hit the wrong language. Now everything is in Dutch, and I can't get it to give me options again. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Ok. that problem is solved. Now, I have no sound (never have had any). Any suggestions?
 
I found version 13 worked perfect on mine. Had to start at 1 and go thru them all. Some looked good but had no sound, others no touchscreen etc.
Just keep trying the list till you get one that works
 
I use this rom. Very good, and fast. Somebody know how can I change language, or how I can tranlate it to Hungarian.

Hello,pls I'm new here and I need a litle help,I got the wondermedia and I've tried downloading d Rom that was suggested but it keeps failing,I guess my internet connection is not soo good,so I was wondering if theres any oda way I cud get it like have it sent to my email or something like that.
And also I can't dial harsh codes on my androId,it says invalid mmi code any suggestions for that?
 
hey can some one help i m new in hacking and all can some one give me instructions from starting b'coz my wm8650 has stopped working after i tried to root it by a ROM that is a something HYBRID......... so can some one plz help me it is a 10" inch wm8650 currently not working and also when i try to start it it just blinks and nothing starts
 
please HELP i have MID tablet 7" WM8650 Kernel 2.6.32.9 and buil version 1.5.7 and i want to boot for the first time but i have a big problem.i try all the number options from 1-to 32 but nothing happens.my tablet stock and say WM8650 Uberoid2.2 upgrade preparing,please wait... after thin nothing happens.maybe Universal_Uberoid_WM8650_v9.1.2 not work for my tablet.This should only take a few minutes to boot the first time.How many minutes it takes because is the firs time to boot...................anybody can help me with this ???
